Effects of defoliation frequencies on above- and belowground biodiversity and ecosystem processes in subtropical grasslands of southern Brazil

Bruna Claudia S. Jorge et al.

Summary: The study found that under low defoliation frequency, there was the highest aboveground biomass accumulation and detritivore activity, promoting the dominance of tussocks. The synergies between vegetation height and biomass tend to provide microclimatic conditions that favor decomposition and nutrient release to plants. However, the defoliation frequencies applied in this study were not sufficient to provide effects on plant community due to their co-evolutionary history with grazing.

Diversity Loss of Epigeic Collembola after Grassland Conversion into Eucalyptus Forestry in Brazilian Pampa Domain

Clecio Danilo Dias da Silva et al.

Summary: This study compared the taxonomic structure and abundance of epigeic springtails in native grassland and Eucalyptus plantation in the Brazilian Pampa. The results showed significant losses in native Collembola communities after grassland afforestation, including abundance, species composition, richness, and alpha diversity. Species turnover and plant richness and dominance were identified as the main factors driving the diversity of Collembola.

Conversion of rainforest into oil palm and rubber plantations affects the functional composition of litter and soil Collembola

Winda Ika Susanti et al.

Summary: The conversion of rainforest into rubber agroforestry, rubber, and oil palm plantations in tropical regions causes changes in species and trait composition of Collembola communities, especially in the litter layer. However, the impact on Collembola in the soil layer is less significant compared to other animal groups.

Carbon and nitrogen stocks and microbiological attributes of soil under eucalyptus cultivation in the Pampa biome of southern Brazil

Julia Rodegheiro de Morais et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of introducing eucalyptus cultivation on soil carbon, nitrogen, their labile fractions, and soil microbiological attributes in the Pampa biome of southern Brazil. The results showed that eucalyptus cultivation increased total carbon and nitrogen stocks in the soil, as well as the labile carbon pool, but had no effect on carbon stocks associated with minerals. Compared to grassland, eucalyptus cultivation also increased basal respiration and microbial biomass carbon in the soil, while decreasing microbial biomass nitrogen.

Macro and mesofauna soil food webs in two temperate grasslands: responses to forestation with Eucalyptus

Maria Leticia Sabatt et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of changing land use from grassland to Eucalyptus plantation on soil food webs in the Rolling Pampas. They found differences in community diversity and composition between grasslands, 10-year-old Eucalyptus plantations, and 20-year-old Eucalyptus plantations. While there were no significant differences in the structure of soil food webs, the communities in the youngest plantations showed evidence of transition characteristics compared to grasslands and older plantations.
