A quantitative global review of species population monitoring

Caroline Moussy et al.

Summary: Species monitoring is crucial for conservation practice and policy. Since 2000, there has been a significant increase in new monitoring schemes in lower- and middle-income countries and in megadiverse countries. The total number of monitoring schemes in a country is strongly positively correlated with its per capita GDP, and monitoring schemes in high-income countries have been running for a longer average time.

Improving the monitoring of conservation programmes: lessons from a grant-making initiative for threatened species

Alessandro Badalotti et al.

Summary: Many conservation projects lack the capacity to effectively monitor the species they aim to protect and the threats they face, leading to compromised adaptive management. A study of 74 conservation projects worldwide found that project managers were more focused on reducing threats and improving habitat conditions rather than achieving positive population changes. There were also geographic differences in data availability, and reptiles and amphibians had more population data collected compared to mammals and birds.

Measuring the Impact of Conservation: The Growing Importance of Monitoring Fauna, Flora and Funga

P. J. Stephenson et al.

Summary: This article reviews the importance of enhancing biodiversity monitoring, assesses the challenges involved, and identifies potential solutions. It highlights the urgent need to strengthen capacity for biodiversity monitoring, especially in poorer, high-biodiversity countries where data gaps are significant. The article also emphasizes the use of modern tools and technologies to fill taxonomic and geographic data gaps, and the importance of stakeholders adopting best monitoring practices, making data openly available, and companies investing in collecting necessary data for sustainability.

Conservation conversations: a typology of barriers to conservation success

Michele Jeanette Sanders et al.

Summary: Despite achievements in conservation, biodiversity decline persists and conservation initiatives encounter various barriers. Analyzing interviews with conservationists, a typology of barriers to conservation success has been created to improve decision-making and overall impact. The typology can also help the conservation community implement better practices and increase the likelihood of success.

The challenge of biased evidence in conservation

Alec P. Christie et al.

Summary: Efforts to address the current biodiversity crisis need to prioritize the generation of evidence by identifying biases and gaps in conservation literature. The majority of studies are concentrated in Western Europe and North America, highlighting the need for more research on conservation actions for amphibians and birds in other regions.

A strategy for the next decade to address data deficiency in neglected biodiversity

Axel Hochkirch et al.

Summary: Information and capacity are lacking for hyperdiverse groups like invertebrates, plants, and fungi, particularly in regions with high species richness or endemism. Post-2020 conservation policies and biodiversity strategies need to adapt to address these information shortfalls. Collaborative efforts among scientists, policy makers, and conservation practitioners are essential to implement strategies aimed at closing existing data gaps and improving the conservation status of biodiversity.
