Safety Profile of Nutraceuticals Rich in Coumarins: An Update

Simona Codruta Heghes et al.

Summary: Coumarins, a family of benzopyrones, are widely distributed in nature and can be found in seeds, fruits, flowers, or roots of various plant species. They are present in significant concentrations in certain herbs or spices used as nutraceuticals, but can also be found in cosmetics or household products due to their pleasant odor. Accidental exposure to high doses of coumarins can lead to harmful effects in patients. This review provides a summary of the latest published data on preclinical and clinical studies with natural coumarins, focusing on the investigation of general and specific toxicity, to better understand the safety profile of these valuable compounds. Regulatory aspects regarding the use of natural coumarins in different regions of the world are also reviewed.

Chemical comparison and discrimination of two plant sources of Angelicae dahuricae Radix, Angelica dahurica and Angelica dahurica var. formosana, by HPLC-Q/TOF-MS and quantitative analysis of multiple components by a single marker

Huan Shi et al.

Summary: This study compared the chemical compositions of Angelica dahurica (BZ) and Angelica dahurica var. formosana (HBZ) and identified chemical markers for their discrimination. The results showed that while the chemical compositions of BZ and HBZ were similar, there were significant differences in the contents of bioactive coumarins. Chemometric analysis identified five coumarins that could be used as chemical markers to distinguish the two botanical origins. This study provides valuable information for understanding the chemical differences between BZ and HBZ and offers feasible methods for quality evaluation and discrimination of herbal medicines of multiple botanical sources.
