Cognitive Outcome 1 Year After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Results From the TRACK-TBI Study

Andrea L. C. Schneider et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop and establish a clinically relevant definition of poor cognitive outcome after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and determine whether baseline clinical variables could predict this outcome. By analyzing the associations between one-year neurobehavioral outcomes and poor cognitive outcome, comparing baseline characteristics across cognitive outcome groups, and building a prediction model, the study found that 13.5% of patients with mTBI experienced poor cognitive outcome, highlighting the need for interventions to optimize cognitive recovery.

Generation of vascularized brain organoids to study neurovascular interactions

Xin-Yao Sun et al.

Summary: This study successfully fused blood vessels and brain organoids to obtain vascularized brain organoids. The fused organoids not only had vascular network-like structures and increased number of neural progenitors, but also contained functional blood-brain barrier-like structures and microglial cells with immune functions.

Vascular Regulation of Developmental Neurogenesis

Johanna Vogenstahl et al.

Summary: The vascular system evolved before the nervous system and symbiotic communication exists between them, which is not limited to nutrient and oxygen supply. Blood vessels play an important role in neurogenesis during the development of the vertebrate central nervous system (CNS).

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Subsequent Acute Pulmonary Inflammatory Response

Seung Hyuk Lim et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the changes in pulmonary inflammatory response after mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). The results showed that mild TBI induced pulmonary histological changes and increased expression of inflammatory cytokines, potentially worsening the prognosis of patients.

Transcriptomic Mapping of Neural Diversity, Differentiation and Functional Trajectory in iPSC-Derived 3D Brain Organoid Models

Kiavash Kiaee et al.

Summary: This study analyzed eight brain organoid transcriptome databases to study the correlation between differentiation protocols and resulting cellular functionality across various 3D organoid and exogenous brain models. Through dimensionality reduction methods, cellular diversity among 3D models was identified and visualized, followed by gene set enrichment analysis and developmental trajectory inference to quantify neuronal behaviors. The results revealed high similarity in cellular composition, differentiation pathways, and expression of functional genes during induction and differentiation phases up to three months in culture, but significant developmental deficits were observed at the 6-month time point.

Shape effect of cerium oxide nanoparticles on mild traumatic brain injury

Dong Hyuk Youn et al.

Summary: The study compared the therapeutic effects of ceria nanospheres and ceria nanorods on mTBI, showing that ceria nanorods were more effective in reducing brain water content and inflammation, but there was no significant difference in cognitive improvement between the two.

The Age of Brain Organoids: Tailoring Cell Identity and Functionality for Normal Brain Development and Disease Modeling

Lisiane O. Porciuncula et al.

Summary: Human brain development research has advanced with the creation of brain organoids from induced pluripotent cells, offering a valuable model for studying the complexity of neuronal network formation. Integration of neural cell activity within brain organoids with genetic, cellular, and morphological data is essential for progressing in the understanding of human development and disease. The technology behind brain organoids has brought advances in the study of neurodevelopmental, pathogen-induced, and neurodegenerative diseases.
