Dynamic profiles and predictive values of some biochemical and haematological quantities in COVID-19 inpatients

Maria Jose Castro-Castro et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the most relevant and worst prognostic indicators associated with COVID-19. The results showed that age, kidney disease, creatinine, lactate dehydrogenase, C-reactive protein, and lymphocyte concentration had the strongest associations with the risk of death. The stability of LD measurement made it a good indicator for prognosis at initial evaluation.

Immunopathology of Hyperinflammation in COVID-19

Joshua N. Gustine et al.

Summary: The rapid spread of COVID-19 has led to an unprecedented global public health crisis with recent studies suggesting that the hyperinflammatory syndrome induced by SARS-CoV-2 is a contributing factor to disease severity and mortality. Pathophysiological research shows that the hyperinflammatory syndrome in severe COVID-19 results from a dysregulated innate immune response. Current potential therapeutic approaches are being investigated to modulate the immune response and mitigate lung injury in severe COVID-19.

HPLC and LC-MS/MS measurement methods for the quantification of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and related metabolites

Ali Unlu et al.

Summary: This article discusses the HPLC and LC-MS/MS methods for measuring methylarginine derivatives, pointing out the problems and solutions in the process from solid phase extraction to reverse phase chromatography separation. Tandem mass spectrometry methods are considered as the gold standard for accurate, selective, sensitive, and rapid measurement of these analytes.

Elevated serum SDMA and ADMA at hospital admission predict in-hospital mortality of COVID-19 patients

Juliane Hannemann et al.

Summary: Elevated serum concentrations of SDMA and ADMA in COVID-19 patients were found to be associated with in-hospital mortality, with specific cut-off values identified for discrimination between patients who survived and those who died. Sequential analysis of these biomarkers allowed for stratification of patients into high, intermediate, and low-risk groups for mortality prediction.

A new haematocytometric index: Predicting severity and mortality risk value in COVID-19 patients

Meltem Kilercik et al.

Summary: Through retrospective review of clinical and laboratory records from 97 cases of COVID-19 in Istanbul, Turkey, this study found that red cell distribution width (RDW), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), hemoglobin (Hgb) and monocyte to neutrophil ratio (MNR) were important haemocytometric parameters in discriminating critical patients from non-critical patients. Trend analysis of CBC-Diff parameters over 30 days of hospitalization showed that NLR on day 2, MNR on day 4, RDW on day 6 and platelet count (PLT) on day 7 of admission were the best time-related parameters in distinguishing non-critical patients from critical patients.
