Normal aging affects unconstrained three-dimensional reaching against gravity with reduced vertical precision and increased co-contraction: a pilot study

George F. Wittenberg et al.

Summary: Reaching for an object is crucial in daily life and rehabilitation, but aging may impair accuracy and movement variability. This study found that older adults had longer initiation time, higher variability and inaccuracy in reaching movements, and greater age-related differences in upper extremity variability. Muscle activation patterns were similar, except for higher co-contraction and tonic levels in some muscles of older adults. These results suggest an age-related deficit in motor planning and correction when gravity is not compensated.

Validity and Reliability of Kinect v2 for Quantifying Upper Body Kinematics during Seated Reaching

Germain Faity et al.

Summary: This study assessed the validity and reliability of Kinect v2 for upper limb reaching kinematics analysis. The results showed that Kinect can reliably assess certain metrics, but has lower reliability in other metrics. Due to its ease of use and markerless properties, Kinect can be used in clinical routine for guiding individualized rehabilitation of the upper limb, but its tracking limitations should be kept in mind.

Quantitative comparison of corticospinal tracts arising from different cortical areas in humans

Noboru Usuda et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively investigated the cortical origin of the corticospinal tract (CST) in healthy volunteers, revealing that the CST arises from nine different cortical areas. The number of fiber tracts gradually decreases from the rostral to caudal spinal segments, but the proportion is maintained throughout the cervical cord. Over 75% of fiber tracts originate from the lateral surface of the frontal lobe.

Concurrent fNIRS and EEG for Brain Function Investigation: A Systematic, Methodology-Focused Review

Rihui Li et al.

Summary: This review critically summarizes the analysis methods used in concurrent fNIRS-EEG studies, providing an up-to-date overview and guideline for future projects. The study identifies and explains three methodological categories of concurrent fNIRS-EEG data analyses and highlights current challenges and potential directions in future research.

The effects of age on brain cortical activation and functional connectivity during video game-based finger-to-thumb opposition movement: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study

Nieqiang Zhang et al.

Summary: The cognitive region of the old group showed bilateral activation, while the young group only showed unilateral activation. Both groups showed a wide range of bilateral activation in the motor region. The FC between cognitive region and motor region of the old group was enhanced considerably.

Recovering arm function in chronic stroke patients using combined anodal HD-tDCS and virtual reality therapy (ReArm): a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Camille O. Muller et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the impact of adding anodal high-definition tDCS to an intensive 3-week upper limb VRT and conventional therapy program in chronic stroke patients. The project recruits 58 chronic stroke patients for a standard 3-week rehabilitation program, with outcome measures including primary wolf motor function test and secondary measures of upper limb function, impairment, compensation, and activities of daily living.
