Summary: Twenty-five to fifty percent of patients undergoing chemotherapy will develop anticipatory nausea and vomiting (ANV). ANV is triggered by environmental cues and shows little response to traditional antiemetic therapy. This study identified brain regions activated during ANV and found sex differences in both behavior and brain areas activated. The findings suggest that therapies targeting the area postrema are not effective in ANV.

Effects of Toll-like receptor 4 inhibition on spatial memory and cell proliferation in male and female adult and aged mice

Summary: Experimental results using TLR4 antagonist TAK-242 on mice suggest that TAK-242 selectively enhances spatial learning and memory in young females, reduces thigmotaxis in the water maze, and lowers corticosterone levels following acute stress in females. TAK-242 decreased hippocampal IL-1 beta expression but had no effect on IL-6 or TNF-alpha. Aged mice showed decreased cell proliferation compared to young mice, but TAK-242 administration had minimal effects on Ki67 positive cell numbers. Thus, pharmacological inhibition of TLR4 improves cognitive function in young females.
