Retrieval of cloud liquid water path using radiosonde measurements: Comparison with MODIS and ERA5

Renju Nandan et al.

Summary: The phase of clouds is crucial in determining how clouds interact with radiation. Long-term radiosonde observations are used to detect cloud layers and retrieve liquid water path (LWP). The diurnal variation of different cloud types is similar, with a high occurrence of mixed clouds observed in all seasons. The retrieved LWP for liquid water clouds is in good agreement with data from MODIS and ERA5, and can be effectively used in various investigations in the absence of direct observations.

Long-term trends in Aerosol Optical Depth obtained across the globe using multi-satellite measurements

Gopika Gupta et al.

Summary: This study uses a multivariate regression trend model to investigate global AOD trends and draws conclusions about satellite measurements and ground observations. Emission control policies, reduction in forest fires, and calm surface winds are the main reasons for the decrease in AOD, while there is an increase in AOD trends in the South Africa region.

Vertical and spatial distribution of elevated aerosol layers obtained using long-term ground-based and space-borne lidar observations

Gopika Gupta et al.

Summary: This study uses ground-based and space-borne lidar measurements to examine the vertical and spatial distribution of aerosols. The research identifies two elevated aerosol layers during the Indian summer monsoon season, with the lower layer extending from Africa to South Asia and the upper layer confined to the Middle East to the China Sea during the monsoon season. Different types of aerosols, such as polluted dust, continental, volcanic ash, and sulfate aerosols, are found in these layers, with varying depolarization ratios.

Local emission and long-range transport impacts on the CO, CO2, and CH4 concentrations at a tropical rural site

Chaithanya D. Jain et al.

Summary: The study conducted in a tropical rural area in southern India shows that the concentrations of CO, CO2, and CH4 are influenced by both local emission and long-range transport, exhibiting strong seasonality and diurnal variations. Local emissions have a significant impact on CO, while the effects on CO2 and CH4 are relatively smaller, with long-range transport dominating over local emissions. The comparison with satellite data products highlights biases and limitations in the sensitivity of satellite trace gas measurements within the boundary layer.

Vertical distributions and columnar properties of the aerosols during different seasons over Kattankulathur (12.82°N, 80.04°E): A semi-urban tropical coastal station

Aravindhavel Ananthavel et al.

Summary: Seasonal characteristics of aerosols over Kattankulathur were studied using various remote sensing datasets, revealing significant differences in the vertical distribution of aerosols in different seasons, mainly influenced by different air masses and aerosol sources such as dust particles.

Estimation of Aerosol Complex Refractive Index over a tropical atmosphere using a synergy of in-situ measurements

Renju Nandan et al.

Summary: The study estimates the complex refractive index of aerosols using surface-based measurements from a tropical rural area in southern India, finding that the imaginary parts are high during the pre-monsoon season. It also reveals that in winter, the contributions to total columnar scattering and absorption mainly come from aerosols below the atmospheric boundary layer, while in the monsoon season, 80-90% of the contribution is from aerosols above the atmosphere.

Estimating the optical extinction of liquid water clouds in the cloud base region

Karolina Sarna et al.

Summary: This paper presents a backscatter lidar signal inversion method for retrieving cloud optical extinction in the cloud base region, showing that it is possible to obtain cloud optical extinction within the cloud with an error better than 5% for up to 90m from the cloud base. The accuracy of the method is smaller at the cloud base, improves with the range within the cloud until 45m, and deteriorates slightly until reaching 90m from the cloud base.

Aerosol impacts on warm-cloud microphysics and drizzle in a moderately polluted environment

Ying-Chieh Chen et al.

Summary: Aerosols in northern Taiwan have shown indirect effects on warm cloud microphysics and precipitations, leading to changes in cloud optical properties and raindrop size distribution. High aerosol loading results in increased cloud condensation nuclei, reduced collision-coalescence rates, and alterations in drizzle frequency and droplet sizes.
