Short-term health effects from outdoor exposure to biomass burning emissions: A review

Angeliki Karanasiou et al.

Summary: The study found that PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations from biomass burning emissions were associated with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and respiratory morbidity. Adjusting for important confounders is crucial in assessing these health effects.

Impact of Biomass Burning on Air Quality in Temuco City, Chile

Felipe Reyes et al.

Summary: The study revealed that in Greater Temuco, Chile, fine particulate matter concentrations were significantly higher in winter compared to spring, with organic compounds dominating the chemical composition. Biomass burning tracers were elevated in the winter atmosphere, indicating local biomass burning as the main source of air pollutants in the region during that season.

Source apportionment of carbonaceous aerosols in Beijing with radiocarbon and organic tracers: insight into the differences between urban and rural sites

Siqi Hou et al.

Summary: Carbonaceous aerosol is a dominant component of fine particles in Beijing. A newly developed method combining C-14 and organic tracers was applied to trace its sources, with findings showing higher fossil-derived OC in urban areas and a decrease in fossil carbon ratio in summer due to less coal consumption. Non-fossil fractions of secondary organic carbon increased in summer, with a larger biogenic component contributing. Comparisons with a chemical mass balance model yielded generally good results, except for cooking aerosol.
