Effect of source variation on the size and mixing state of black carbon aerosol in urban Beijing from 2013 to 2019: Implication on light absorption

Yunfei Wu et al.

Summary: The size distribution and mixing state of refractory black carbon (rBC) in urban Beijing from 2013 to 2019 were investigated to understand the effects of source changes, showing a larger mass equivalent diameter and more thickly coated rBC particles in winter. However, no evident increase in BC light-absorption capability was observed in winter, likely due to the lower absorption efficiency of larger rBC and the decrease in fcoatBC.

Spectral absorption properties of organic carbon aerosol during a polluted winter in Beijing, China

Yunfei Wu et al.

Summary: The study estimated the absorption coefficient of organic carbon (OC) in Beijing during a polluted winter, finding that the absorption properties of OC are influenced by the coating thickness and wavelength of black carbon. The mass absorption efficiency of OC significantly decreased as wavelength increased.

Impact of deliquescence of aerosol on mass absorption efficiency of elemental carbon in fine particles in urban Guangzhou in south China

Jun Tao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the factors affecting the mass absorption efficiency (MAE) of elemental carbon (EC) in fine particles (PM2.5) in an urban environment in Guangzhou, China. It found that high EC MAE was related to elevated nitrate mass concentration and positive Delta RH, while no significant correlations were observed with EC mass distribution or chemical composition ratios.

Real-Time Characterization of Aerosol Compositions, Sources, and Aging Processes in Guangzhou During PRIDE-GBA 2018 Campaign

Wei Chen et al.

Summary: A comprehensive field campaign was conducted in Guangzhou urban area to investigate the chemical compositions, sources, and aging processes of submicron particles (PM1) during autumn. Organic aerosols were the main contributor to PM1, with sulfate and inorganic nitrate also playing significant roles. Inorganic nitrate was identified as the main driving component for the increase of PM1, and secondary organic aerosols were found to be the major source of organic aerosols in Guangzhou autumn.

Optical and hygroscopic properties of black carbon influenced by particle microphysics at the top of the anthropogenically polluted boundary layer

Shuo Ding et al.

Summary: This study reveals that black carbon (BC) plays a significant role in modifying the atmospheric dynamics at the top of the polluted planetary boundary layer (PBL) over the continent. The detailed measurements show that BC properties differ between winter and summer, leading to variations in mass absorption cross section and single-scattering albedo, impacting water supersaturation, cloud droplet activation, and indirect radiative effects.
