First Sagittarius A* Event Horizon Telescope Results. III. Imaging of the Galactic Center Supermassive Black Hole

Kazunori Akiyama et al.

Summary: This article presents the first event-horizon-scale images and spatiotemporal analysis of Sgr A* taken with the Event Horizon Telescope in April 2017. Different imaging methods and scattering effect corrections were used to reconstruct the static images of Sgr A*. The analysis shows that the Sgr A* image is dominated by a bright ring of emission with a diameter of about 50 microarcseconds, consistent with the expected shadow of a 4 x 10^6 solar mass black hole in the Galactic center at a distance of 8 kiloparsecs.

First Sagittarius A* Event Horizon Telescope Results. I. The Shadow of the Supermassive Black Hole in the Center of the Milky Way

Kazunori Akiyama et al.

Summary: This study presents the first observations of Sagittarius A* using the Event Horizon Telescope. The data supports the presence of a supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, with an image that is consistent with the expected appearance of a Kerr black hole. The results also connect dynamical measurements of stellar orbits to event-horizon-scale images.

Adiabatic accretion onto black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory

Haiyuan Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the adiabatic accretion process of ordinary baryonic gas onto spherically symmetric black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory. Two coupling parameters are introduced, which have different effects on the mass accretion rate and temperature ratios of the accreted gas. The range of transonic points and modifications to the accretion process are demonstrated in terms of charge-to-mass ratio squared and dimensionless coordinate radius for two important classes of black holes.

Accretion of the relativistic Vlasov gas in the equatorial plane of the Kerr black hole

Adam Cieslik et al.

Summary: We investigate the stationary accretion of collisionless Vlasov gas onto a Kerr black hole occurring in the equatorial plane. The solution is determined by imposing asymptotic boundary conditions: the gas obeys the Maxwell-Juttner distribution at infinity, restricted to the equatorial plane in terms of both position and momentum. The motion of the gas near the black hole is governed by the spacetime geometry. Our study focuses on the accretion rates of rest mass, energy, and angular momentum, as well as the particle number surface density, and their dependence on the asymptotic temperature of the gas and the black hole spin. We find that the rest mass and energy-accretion rates increase with increasing asymptotic temperature, when normalized by the black hole mass and appropriate asymptotic surface densities of the gas. Accretion also slows down the rotation of the black hole.

Spherical accretion flow onto general parameterized spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes

Sen Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spherical accretion flow onto general parametrized spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes, analyzing the accretion process for various perfect fluids. The influences of additional parameters beyond the Schwarzschild black hole on flow behavior are studied in detail, as well as the accretion of the ideal photon gas and its correspondence with the photon sphere for general parameterized spherically symmetric black holes. Possible extensions of the analysis are also discussed.

Accretion of matter and spectra of binary X-ray sources in massive gravity

Grigoris Panotopoulos et al.

Summary: We study low-mass binary X-ray sources involving stellar mass black holes within massive gravity, considering the impact of the gravitational field on the accretion disk. By analyzing various properties and emission components, we found that observed spectra from X-ray binaries can provide strong constraints on alternative theories of gravity.

Accretion of Dark Matter onto a Moving Schwarzschild Black Hole: An Exact Solution

Patryk Mach et al.

Summary: This study examines the accretion of dark matter onto a moving Schwarzschild black hole, deriving a relationship between the accretion rate and the black hole velocity, with a monotonic relation found in high-temperature situations. The results are relevant for understanding the growth of primordial black holes in the early Universe.

Accretion of a Vlasov gas onto a black hole from a sphere of finite radius and the role of angular momentum

Aldo Gamboa et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the accretion of a spherically symmetric, collisionless kinetic gas cloud onto a Schwarzschild black hole using four different models with increasing sophistication. The resulting mass accretion rates are compared with previous models, and the applications to supermassive black holes Sgr A* and M87* are discussed. The results are consistent with previous model-dependent bounds and estimations, and could serve as a first approximation for more realistic black hole accretion models in various astrophysical scenarios where the accreted material is expected to be nearly collisionless.

Accretion of the relativistic Vlasov gas onto a moving Schwarzschild black hole: Exact solutions

Patryk Mach et al.

Summary: The study presents an exact solution for the stationary accretion of relativistic collisionless Vlasov gas onto a moving Schwarzschild black hole, providing explicit expressions for particle current density and accretion rates. In the case of thermal equilibrium at infinite distance, the accretion rate is not strictly a monotonic function of black hole velocity.
