The Cold Interstellar Medium of Galaxies in the Local Universe

Amelie Saintonge et al.

Summary: The cold interstellar medium is crucial for galaxy evolution, serving as a fuel source for star formation and reflecting internal and external processes. Systematic surveys have revealed scaling relations connecting gas masses with various global properties, providing insights into galaxy evolution. Factors affecting star formation rate include total cold ISM mass, molecular gas content, and conversion rate, highlighting the importance of exploring scaling relations for a better understanding of galaxy evolution.

Insufficient Gas Accretion Caused the Decline in Cosmic Star-formation Activity Eight Billion Years Ago

Aditya Chowdhury et al.

Summary: Measurements of the atomic hydrogen properties of high-redshift galaxies are crucial for understanding the decline in the star formation rate density of the universe. Using observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, the dependence of the average Hi mass of star-forming galaxies on their average stellar mass and redshift is measured. It is found that the Hi reservoirs of galaxies with high stellar mass can only sustain their star formation rates for a short period of time, unless replenished via accretion. Additionally, the average Hi mass of galaxies with a specific stellar mass declines over approximately 1 billion years.

MIGHTEE-HI: Evolution of HI Scaling Relations of Star-forming Galaxies at z < 0.5

Francesco Sinigaglia et al.

Summary: We present the first measurements of H I galaxy scaling relations from a blind survey at z > 0.15. Using spectral stacking of star-forming galaxies undetected in H I, we obtain greater than or similar to 5 sigma detections in most cases, revealing a moderate evolution in the scaling relations for low-M-* galaxies and no evolution for massive galaxies. The findings suggest a scenario in which low-M(*) galaxies have experienced H I depletion while massive galaxies have undergone H I replenishment, supporting the predictions of the simba simulation.

Atomic Gas Dominates the Baryonic Mass of Star-forming Galaxies at z ≈ 1.3

Aditya Chowdhury et al.

Summary: The study found that the baryonic composition of galaxies at around z=1 is significantly different from that at around z=0, with atomic gas making up approximately 70% of the baryonic mass in star-forming galaxies at z=1.3, during the peak epoch of star formation activity in the universe.

The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope Cold-Hi AT z ≈ 1 Survey

Aditya Chowdhury et al.

Summary: This paper describes a survey of high-redshift galaxies using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. The results show that these galaxies have a high stellar mass during the peak period of star formation activity, but their interstellar gas is depleted quickly, potentially leading to a quenching of star formation.

Star Formation and Quenching of Central Galaxies from Stacked Hi Measurements

Hong Guo et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the HI mass of central galaxies plays a direct role in regulating star formation and quenching, rather than halo mass or stellar mass. Low-mass galaxies show an increase in HI reservoir with increasing halo mass, while more massive galaxies do not show significant dependence on halo mass, with the main effect being the determination of smooth cold gas accretion. The relation between star formation rate and HI mass suggests a quasi-steady state of star formation, with galaxies depleting their HI reservoir once they move away from the star formation main sequence.

Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope Detection of Hi 21 cm Emission from Star-forming Galaxies at z ≈ 1.3

Aditya Chowdhury et al.

Summary: This study conducted a 400-hour search for Hi 21 cm emission from star-forming galaxies using GMRT, resulting in a 5.0 sigma detection of the average Hi 21 cm signal from 2841 galaxies at an average redshift z approximately 1.3. The study found that the average Hi mass and Hi-to-stellar mass ratio in galaxies at this redshift were significantly higher than those in similar galaxies in the local universe. Additionally, the study stacked the 1.4 GHz continuum emission of the galaxies to obtain a median star formation rate.
