Hubble Space Telescope Observations of GW170817: Complete Light Curves and the Properties of the Galaxy Merger of NGC 4993

Charles D. Kilpatrick et al.

Summary: We present a comprehensive analysis of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 and its optical counterpart AT 2017gfo using the Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Our findings include new detections of the short gamma-ray burst afterglow, consistent with previously observed spectral index. We also analyze the local environment around AT 2017gfo and the host galaxy NGC 4993, ruling out the presence of certain features and identifying shell structures. Our conclusion suggests that the progenitor system of GW170817 is unlikely to have formed during a galaxy merger.

Host galaxies and electromagnetic counterparts to binary neutron star mergers across the cosmic time: detectability of GW170817-like events

Rosalba Perna et al.

Summary: The association of GRB170817A with a binary neutron star merger suggests that at least some short gamma-ray bursts are produced by such mergers. In this study, population synthesis calculations are performed to assess the probabilities of simultaneous electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations of binary neutron star mergers. The results show that the detection probabilities of gamma-ray emission range from 2% to 40% for random viewing angles, and increase to 75% for aligned jets triggered by gravitational waves. The afterglow detection probabilities of GW-triggered BNS mergers vary from 0.3% to 0.5%, with higher values for aligned jets.

The First Short GRB Millimeter Afterglow: The Wide-angled Jet of the Extremely Energetic SGRB 211106A

Tanmoy Laskar et al.

Summary: We report the discovery of the first millimeter afterglow of a short-duration gamma-ray burst (SGRB) and confirm its localization using the GUANO system on Swift. The ALMA detection of SGRB 211106A reveals its origin in a faint host galaxy with high extinction along the line of sight. The millimeter light curve captures the synchrotron peak and reveals a jet break at 29.2 days. We find that energetic outflows in high-density environments are more likely to have detectable millimeter counterparts.

A deep survey of short GRB host galaxies over z ∼ 0-2: implications for offsets, redshifts, and environments

B. O'Connor et al.

Summary: A significant fraction of well-localized short gamma-ray bursts lack a coincident host galaxy, suggesting that their progenitor system merged outside the visible range or resided within a faint and distant galaxy. Distinguishing between these scenarios is important for understanding neutron star mergers, gravitational wave sources, and heavy element production. The study shows that most sub-arcsecond localized sGRBs occur within 10 kpc of their host's nucleus, with a redshift evolution in their locations.

GRB 180418A: A Possibly Short Gamma-Ray Burst with a Wide-angle Outflow in a Faint Host Galaxy

A. Rouco Escorial et al.

Summary: The observations of GRB 180418A suggest that it may be a short-duration burst with a hard spectrum. The afterglow characteristics indicate that its luminosity is intermediate between short and long bursts, and it lies closer to the E (gamma,peak)-E (gamma, iso) correlation for short bursts.

Stellar Population Inference with Prospector

Benjamin D. Johnson et al.

Summary: Inferring the physical properties of stellar populations from observed photometry and spectroscopy is a key goal in galaxy evolution research. Recent advancements in data quality and quantity have led to more realistic stellar population models. These models require a large number of highly correlated parameters, making the description of observed galaxy spectral energy distributions more complex.

Summary: This study presents the photometric properties and mass distributions of host galaxies of various types of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). Differences in preferences for galaxy properties were found among different SN classes, with Type Ib/c SNe preferring galaxies with higher masses and metallicities. H-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) were scarce in galaxies with high masses, requiring environments with low metallicities and younger stellar populations as progenitors.

Summary: Gamma-ray bursts are some of the brightest and most energetic events in the Universe, with different durations and hardness distributions indicating different progenitors. This study presents the discovery of a new optical transient related to collapsar, while GRB 200826A is found to be the shortest LGRB associated with collapsar.

A tale of two mergers: constraints on kilonova detection in two short GRBs at z ∼ 0.5

B. O'Connor et al.

Summary: We conducted a detailed multiwavelength analysis of two short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The sGRBs, GRB 160624A and GRB 200522A, exhibited different properties in their emission and environments. GRB 160624A was associated with an older galaxy with moderate star formation, while GRB 200522A showed a luminous and red counterpart, possibly due to either kilonova emission or extinction effects.

Summary: We discovered the radio afterglow and near-infrared counterpart of the Swift short gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB 200522A, which showed different luminosity compared to other similar kilonova candidates, possibly requiring alternative explanations with additional heating sources. If a stable magnetar was indeed produced in GRB 200522A, late-time radio emissions are predicted to be detectable 0.3-6 years after the burst.
