The width of Herschel filaments varies with distance

G. Panopoulou et al.

Summary: The filamentary structures in nearby molecular clouds have a characteristic width of 0.1 pc, which was found to depend significantly on the distance from the observer. This suggests that the universal characteristic width of 0.1 pc may not hold true for all molecular cloud filaments.

A Study of 90 GHz Dust Emissivity on Molecular Cloud and Filament Scales

Ian Lowe et al.

Summary: Recent observations from different instruments have revealed enhanced long-wavelength emission in the dust spectral energy distribution in the Orion Molecular Cloud. The excess emission is present at 3 mm, with stronger enhancement observed in other regions. A two-component dust model and an amorphous grain dust model have been considered but have significant drawbacks.

Low Mass Stars as Tracers of Star and Cluster Formation

S. T. Megeath et al.

Summary: It has been found that young low mass stars and protostars, known as young stellar objects (YSOs), can serve as important tracers of star formation. Observations of molecular clouds at various wavelengths can detect and characterize the spatial distribution of YSOs, including deeply embedded objects at different evolutionary stages. YSO surveys have provided insights into the structures, ages, and star formation histories of embedded clusters, and have revealed the relationship between clusters and the molecular clouds they form from. Measurements of the motions of YSOs have also shed light on the factors that shape the formation of bound clusters.

The role of magnetic fields in the stability and fragmentation of filamentary molecular clouds: two case studies at OMC-3 and OMC-4

Pak Shing Li et al.

Summary: The stability analysis of two regions, OMC-3 and OMC-4, in the Orion A molecular cloud complex reveals that OMC-3 is in the gravitational collapse phase with many young stellar objects forming, while OMC-4 has a dominating strong magnetic field that hinders star formation.

Dissecting the Supercritical Filaments Embedded in the 0.5 pc Subsonic Region of Barnard 5

Anika Schmiedeke et al.

Summary: The study focuses on two filamentary structures in the subsonic region of Barnard 5, revealing their highly supercritical nature and the necessity of a strong magnetic field to resist radial collapse. Additionally, an anticorrelation between filament width and central density suggests contraction behavior.

Magnetohydrostatic Equilibrium Structure and Mass of Polytropic Filamentary Cloud Threaded by Lateral Magnetic Field

Raiga Kashiwagi et al.

Summary: This paper studied the magnetohydrostatic equilibrium state of negative-indexed polytropic gas in filamentary structures and found that the envelope of the column density profile becomes shallow when the temperature gradient is large, reconciling inconsistencies between observed and expected profiles. Furthermore, it was discovered that a magnetic field threading the filament increases the maximum line mass of the filament, despite the negative-indexed polytrope causing a decrease in maximum line mass compared with the isothermal model.

A PPMAP analysis of the filamentary structures in Ophiuchus L1688 and L1689

A. D. P. Howard et al.

Summary: The PPMAP algorithm reanalyzed observations of the L1688 and L1689 subregions of the Ophiuchus molecular cloud, delivering high-resolution maps and more accurate dust optical depths. Most filaments and pre-stellar cores are located in regions with high N-H2 values, with some exceptions influenced by feedback from nearby stars. The study suggests that most starless cores are likely to disperse instead of evolving into pre-stellar cores.

The ionization fraction in OMC-2 and OMC-3

P. Salas et al.

Summary: The electron density (ne) and gas temperature in the envelope of the integral shaped filament (ISF) in the Orion A molecular cloud were directly measured using carbon radio recombination lines and far-infrared lines of C. The results showed a gas density of around 5×10^3 cm^-3, electron density ranging from 0.65 to 0.95 cm^-3, and an ionization fraction of less than 3×10^-3.

Probing the structure of a massive filament: ArTeMiS 350 and 450 μm mapping of the integral-shaped filament in Orion A

F. Schuller et al.

Summary: This study characterized the structure of the integral-shaped filament (ISF) within the Orion A molecular cloud, revealing intrinsic half-power widths in the range of 0.06-0.11 pc, significantly larger than the Gaussian widths measured for fibres seen in N2H+. This suggests that the physical conditions governing fragmentation of pre-stellar cores within transcritical or supercritical filaments are consistent over a wide range of masses per unit length.
