Discovery and properties of ultra-high redshift galaxies (9 < z < 12) in the JWST ERO SMACS 0723 Field

N. J. Adams et al.

Summary: We conduct a search for ultra-high-redshift galaxies (z > 9) using new post-launch calibrations and identify four candidate galaxies, including one at z = 11.5 and a possible pair of galaxies. However, the recovery rate for these candidates is low, with many being assigned lower redshifts in our work. Our analysis reveals evidence of Balmer-breaks and extreme emission lines, indicating advanced or very young stellar populations depending on the cause of the excess. The resolved structures of these early galaxies show a mixture of light concentration levels, with exceptionally small sizes (<0.5 kpc).

A Comprehensive Study of Galaxies at z ∼9-16 Found in the Early JWST Data: Ultraviolet Luminosity Functions and Cosmic Star Formation History at the Pre-reionization Epoch

Yuichi Harikane et al.

Summary: We conducted a comprehensive study on dropout galaxy candidates at z similar to 9-16 using the JWST's early release observations. We applied secure photo-z selection criteria and obtained 23 dropout galaxies. Our galaxy sample is reliable for statistical analyses and we derived the UV luminosity functions at z similar to 9-16. The study revealed high cosmic star formation rates and the existence of UV-luminous galaxies, suggesting the lack of suppression of star formation at the pre-reionization epoch.

Dusty Starbursts Masquerading as Ultra-high Redshift Galaxies in JWST CEERS Observations

Jorge A. Zavala et al.

Summary: Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) candidates at z greater than or similar to 10 have been identified in James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)/NIRCam observations. However, we have found that dust-enshrouded star-forming galaxies at lower redshifts may mimic the near-infrared colors of z > 10 LBGs, potentially contaminating LBG candidate samples.

JWST's PEARLS: A JWST/NIRCam View of ALMA Sources

Cheng Cheng et al.

Summary: We present new observations from the James Webb Space Telescope/NIRCam of (sub)millimeter sources detected by ALMA. We identified their NIRCam counterparts and found that they represent 16 distinct galaxies in three fields. The photometric redshifts and stellar masses of these sources are similar to previously studied submillimeter galaxies. The deep NIRCam data revealed that the majority of these sources are disk-like with little disturbance, suggesting that secular growth may play a role in their assembly.

An efficient method for simulating light curves of cosmological microlensing and caustic crossing events

Ashish Kumar Meena et al.

Summary: A new method for simulating light curves of caustic-crossing events in galaxy clusters is presented, which can provide valuable information about individual stars and small sources at cosmological distances. The method, named Adaptive Boundary Method, is shown to be more efficient and accurate than other common methods in the small-source and high-magnification regime.

A highly magnified star at redshift 6.2

Brian Welch et al.

Summary: Researchers report the observation of a distant and persistent magnified star at a redshift of 6.2, magnified by a factor of thousands by the foreground galaxy cluster lens. The observed brightness of this star has remained constant over 3.5 years. The delensed absolute UV magnitude suggests a star with a mass greater than 50 times that of the Sun.

Godzilla, a monster lurks in the Sunburst galaxy

J. M. Diego et al.

Summary: We modeled the strong lensing effect in the galaxy cluster PSZ1 G311.65-18.48 (z = 0.443) using an improved version of the hybrid method WSLAP +. We included the position of critical points as additional constraints and focused on a transient candidate source (Tr) previously discovered in the giant Sunburst arc (z = 2.37). Our lens model predicted the position of Tr to be close to the critical curve, but the observed flux and lack of counterimages still couldn't be explained. We discussed the need for a small mass perturber in order to account for the required magnification and morphology of the lensed galaxy, and also explored the characteristics and possible candidates for the highly magnified object.

Unscrambling the Lensed Galaxies in JWST Images behind SMACS 0723

Massimo Pascale et al.

Summary: The first deep field images from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) reveal new lensed images at uncharted infrared wavelengths, with unprecedented depth and resolution. These images provide opportunities for detailed research on the redshift, chemical abundances, and gas dynamics of distant galaxies. The study also found an Einstein cross candidate and evidence of past dynamical disturbances.

A New Era of Intracluster Light Studies with JWST

Mireia Montes et al.

Summary: This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of the intracluster light (ICL) of the cluster SMACS J0723.3-7327 using the JWST Early Release Observations. The results show that the inner parts of the cluster are formed through major mergers, while the outer parts are produced by tidal stripping. Furthermore, the stellar mass density of the ICL closely follows the predicted dark matter halo slope, supporting the idea of using the ICL as a tracer of dark matter distribution.

Early Results from GLASS-JWST. VIII. An Extremely Magnified Blue Supergiant Star at Redshift 2.65 in the A2744 Cluster Field

Wenlei Chen et al.

Summary: We report the discovery of an extremely magnified star at redshift z = 2.65 in the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRISS pre-imaging of the A2744 galaxy-cluster field. The star is identified as a microlensing event of an individual star and its magnification does not change rapidly during the observations. The star's temperature is estimated to be approximately 7000-12,000 K.

Discovery and properties of ultra-high redshift galaxies (9 < z < 12) in the JWST ERO SMACS 0723 Field

Summary: We conducted an analysis of the James Webb Space Telescope's SMACS 0723 field to search for ultra-high-redshift galaxies. We found four previously unidentified candidate galaxies, with one object at z = 11.5 and another possibly being a pair of galaxies. Most of the candidate galaxies showed evidence of color breaks and emission lines related to gas. These galaxies were exceptionally small in size and had relatively low masses. These candidates will be important targets for future observations to better understand their physical nature.

Head-to-Toe Measurement of El Gordo: Improved Analysis of the Galaxy Cluster ACT-CL J0102-4915 with New Wide-field Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Data

Summary: We present an improved weak-lensing study of the high-z merging galaxy cluster ACT-CL J0102-4915 (El Gordo) based on new wide-field Hubble Space Telescope imaging data. The study confirmed the binary mass structure of the cluster and obtained mass estimates of the subclusters. The updated mass measurement is consistent with the current ACDM cosmology and provides a more direct measurement without extrapolation.

Statistical microlensing towards magnified high-redshift star clusters

Liang Dai

Summary: The study reveals that gravitationally magnified star clusters exhibit a scale-invariant Gaussian process on time-scales of years to decades, with rapid and frequent micro-caustic crossing flares of larger amplitudes on time-scales of days to months. Detailed measurement of this variability can help determine the mass and length scales of the star cluster, and explore multiplicity of massive stars. Monitoring other lensed images of the star cluster can enable the detection of compact objects constituting as little as a few per cent of the dark matter.

ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey: An ALMA Galaxy Signposting a MUSE Galaxy Group at z=4.3 Behind El Gordo

Summary: The discovery of a MUSE galaxy group at redshift 4.32, lensed by the ACT-CL J0102-4915 cluster at redshift 0.87, with a 1.2 mm source associated, suggests that these galaxies are growing fast. The high incidence of starburst galaxies within the compact and high velocity dispersion galaxy group implies interactions are driving this growth. The ALMA source is classified as an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy, indicating a rich star-forming environment at high redshifts.
