Right Ventricular Dysfunction is Associated with Increased Mortality in Patients Requiring Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Coronavirus Disease 2019

Valmiki Maharaj et al.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical and echocardiographic characteristics of patients with respiratory failure caused by COVID-19 and found that moderate to severe right ventricular dysfunction is associated with increased mortality.

Prone positioning during venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for acute respiratory distress syndrome: a pooled individual patient data analysis

Marco Giani et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between prone positioning during extracorporeal support and ICU mortality in patients with severe ARDS using pooled individual patient data analysis of European cohort studies. The findings suggest that the use of prone positioning during ECMO was not significantly associated with reduced ICU mortality in a large population of ARDS patients.

Continuous long-term wireless measurement of right ventricular pressures and estimated diastolic pulmonary artery pressure in patients with severe COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome

Matthias Gaertner et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated right ventricular pressures and estimated diastolic pulmonary artery pressures in COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome patients, showing that survivors had lower right ventricular pressure and ePAD compared to non-survivors, indicating successful reduction of RVSP by pulmonary vasodilators.

Continuous long-term wireless measurement of right ventricular pressures and estimated diastolic pulmonary artery pressure in patients with severe COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome

Matthias Gaertner et al.

Summary: In this study, continuous monitoring of right ventricular pressures and ePAD in mechanically ventilated patients with severe COVID-19 ARDS revealed significantly lower RVSP in survivors compared to non-survivors, suggesting successful lowering by pulmonary vasodilators. The ePAD was significantly higher in non-survivors compared to surviving patients, indicating a potential indicator of left heart failure. Treatment with pulmonary vasodilators may help improve patient survival.
