The health digital twin to tackle cardiovascular disease-a review of an emerging interdisciplinary field

Genevieve Coorey et al.

Summary: Precision medicine in cardiovascular disease has the potential to benefit from the concept of digital twins, where virtual representations of patients receive real-time updates on various data variables to predict diseases and optimize treatment selection. Through a systematic literature review, it was found that digital twin research in the field of cardiovascular disease is interdisciplinary and globally established, with numerical simulation models being the main focus. However, implementation challenges include ethical constraints and clinical barriers to the adoption of decision tools based on artificial intelligence systems.

Gene-environment interactions explain a substantial portion of variability of common neuropsychiatric disorders

Hanxin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explores the contribution of gene-environment interactions in ten major neuropsychiatric disorders, finding that while they only account for a small portion of total phenotypic variance in some disorders, they play a significantly larger role in others. The research integrates clinical data, family pedigrees, spatial distribution of individuals, socio-economic and demographic factors, and environmental measurements.

Virtual patients for mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit

Cong Zhou et al.

Summary: The study develops a digital clone model to predict lung mechanics in response to changes in mechanical ventilation, enabling personalised care. Results show that the virtual patient model accurately predicts patient-specific lung responses, guiding personalised and optimised mechanical ventilation therapy.

Digital Twins: From Personalised Medicine to Precision Public Health

Maged N. Kamel Boulos et al.

Summary: A digital twin is a virtual model of a physical entity, increasingly used in various industry sectors. In the fields of medicine and public health, digital twin technology can drive radical transformation towards precision medicine and personalized treatments. Digital twins enable learning, discovering new knowledge, and hypothesis generation, while also playing a key role in formulating highly personalized treatments and interventions.
