SRB-based bioelectrochemical system: A potential multipollutant combatant for enhanced landfill waste stabilization

Sushma K. Varma et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) based bioelectrochemical-system (BES) in decontaminating landfill wastes by reducing GHGs emissions and levels of soluble pollutants. The study shows significant improvement in hydrogen production, reduction in heavy metals concentration, and reduction in NO3 levels in treated leachate. The BES-treated solid waste is stabilized and can be applied in leachate immobilization and bio-fortification of agricultural fields.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of bio and electrochemical reactions during pretreatment of rice straw using different solvents, revealing the involvement of electrolytic breakdown of lignocellulosic biomass and the production of hydrogen and volatile fatty acids. The electrochemical process showed advantages in acetic acid formation at lower temperatures, leading to improved accessibility of biomass to enzymes for value-added product recovery.

Impact of partially submersed iron scraps in simultaneously sulfate and nitrate removal using sulfate-reducing bacteria

Varsha Dhar et al.

Summary: In this study, partially submerged iron scraps were used to react with contaminants for pollutant removal. The optimal conditions were found to be 0 g/50 ml iron scraps, 3 g/L sulfate, and 0.375 g/L nitrate, resulting in a maximum sulfate removal of 49.37%. The iron scraps were effective in removing both high concentrations of sulfate and nitrate under different conditions.

Simultaneous nitrate and sulfate dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane linking carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycles

Wen-Bo Nie et al.

Summary: ANME archaea can mediate simultaneous sulfate- and nitrate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane, forming a crucial link between the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles in natural environments. They collaborate with sulfate-reducing bacteria to convert sulfate to sulfide and then sulfide-oxidizing autotrophic denitrifiers to oxidize sulfide back to sulfate, thereby alleviating sulfide accumulation. The unique nanonets formed by ANME-2d and SRB likely facilitate electron transfer, highlighting the complex interactions in methane oxidation processes.

Hydrogen sulfide affects the performance of a methanogenic bioelectrochemical system used for biogas upgrading

Christy M. Dykstra et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of hydrogen sulfide addition to the cathode headspace on the performance of methanogenic bioelectrochemical systems (BESs). The results showed that low concentrations of H2S can increase methane production, but higher concentrations can lead to inhibition. The transport and oxidation of sulfide in the anode were found to play a crucial role in methanogenic BESs treating sulfide-bearing biogas.

Denitrification Biokinetics: Towards Optimization for Industrial Applications

Navreet Suri et al.

Summary: This study investigated the denitrification kinetics of three Thauera strains using acetate as an electron donor. The results showed that under low initial nitrate concentrations and pH 7.5, complete nitrate reduction to N-2 was achieved by all strains, but at high initial nitrate concentrations, different strains exhibited variations in denitrification rates and product formation. pH and nitrite accumulation were found to significantly impact denitrification rates and product formation, highlighting the importance of pH control in promoting specific denitrification pathways for industrial applications.
