Frequency, Characteristics and Complications of COVID-19 in Hospitalized Infants

Charlotte Hobbs et al.

Summary: This study found that infants accounted for over a fifth of hospitalized severe acute COVID-19 patients, commonly presenting with respiratory symptoms and complications. Although most patients had good recovery, long-term outcomes remain uncertain. The study also underscores the importance of COVID-19 vaccination for infants and mothers.

Neonates and COVID-19: state of the art Neonatal Sepsis series

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant impacts on neonates, including increased premature birth rates and adverse events in neonates. More research is needed to determine the full extent of the impacts and future management guidelines.

Impact of Gestational COVID-19 on Neonatal Outcomes Is Vertical Infection Possible?

Sara Vigil-Vazquez et al.

Summary: The study suggests that intrauterine transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is possible but rare, with early postnatal transmission occurring more frequently. Most infected newborns remained asymptomatic or had mild symptoms and improved during follow-up.

SARS-CoV-2 positivity in offspring and timing of mother-to-child transmission: living systematic review and meta-analysis

John Allotey et al.

Summary: Rates of SARS-CoV-2 positivity in babies born to mothers with the infection were found to be low. Evidence suggests that confirmed vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 may be rare. The severity of maternal covid-19 appears to be associated with SARS-CoV-2 positivity in offspring.

International comparison of guidelines for managing neonates at the early phase of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic

Anna Lavizzari et al.

Summary: At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, countries worldwide implemented protocols for managing infants born to SARS-CoV-2-positive mothers, with variations among regions. Discrepancies were identified in national guidance concerning triaging, use of personal protection equipment, viral testing, and visitor policies. Local protocols sometimes deviated from national guidelines.

Pregnancy and neonatal outcomes of COVID-19: coreporting of common outcomes from PAN-COVID and AAP-SONPM registries

E. Mullins et al.

Summary: This study analyzed data from two registries in the UK and USA regarding pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The results showed a higher rate of preterm delivery than historical and contemporaneous national data, and rates of stillbirth, extreme preterm delivery, and neonatal infection were comparable to historical and contemporaneous data.

Characteristics and outcomes of neonatal SARS-CoV-2 infection in the UK: a prospective national cohort study using active surveillance

Chris Gale et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the incidence, characteristics, transmission, and outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in neonates who received inpatient hospital care in the UK. The findings showed that neonatal SARS-CoV-2 infection was uncommon in babies admitted to hospital, with low likelihood of infection following birth to a mother with perinatal SARS-CoV-2 infection and rare possible vertical transmission. The high proportion of babies from Black, Asian, or minority ethnic groups requires further investigation.

Summary: Through analysis of the UK National Neonatal Research Database, it was found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, there were significant changes in the number of preterm and full-term admissions to neonatal units, care processes, and outcomes nationwide, with disproportionate effects on black ethnic groups.

Association of Maternal SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Pregnancy With Neonatal Outcomes

Mikael Norman et al.

Summary: In a nationwide cohort of infants in Sweden, maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnancy was significantly associated with small increases in some neonatal morbidities. Given the small numbers of events for many of the outcomes and the large number of statistical comparisons, the findings should be interpreted as exploratory.

The incidence, characteristics and outcomes of pregnant women hospitalized with symptomatic and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in the UK from March to September 2020: A national cohort study using the UK Obstetric Surveillance System (UKOSS)

Nicola Vousden et al.

Summary: The study identified factors that increase the risk of symptomatic and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnancy. Clinicians can be reassured that the majority of women do not experience severe complications of SARS-CoV-2 in pregnancy. Cesarean birth rates and neonatal unit admission rates were increased for pregnant women with symptomatic and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2. The risks of stillbirth or neonatal death were not significantly increased.
