The heteroaggregation and deposition behavior of nanoplastics on Al2O3 in aquatic environments

Jiayan Wu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the interaction between polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) and Al2O3 under different conditions. It was found that significant heteroaggregation occurred between PSNPs and Al2O3 under acidic and neutral conditions. The NaCl concentration and pH values influenced the deposition of PSNPs on Al2O3 surfaces. Humic acid and fulvic acid prevented the deposition of PSNPs, with humic acid being more effective. The research provides insights into the migration and fate of PSNPs in aquatic environments.

Combined exposure to microplastics and zinc produces sex-specific responses in the water flea Daphnia magna

Yoseop Lee et al.

Summary: The study revealed potential synergistic effects between microplastics and zinc, resulting in gender-specific impacts on Daphnia magna, with males showing greater sensitivity than females. Additionally, microplastics were found to act as vectors for metals in the aquatic environment, leading to increased toxicity.

Effect of Dissolved Organic Matter Concentration and Source on the Chronic Toxicity of Copper and Nickel Mixtures to Chlorella sp.

Gabriella K. Macoustra et al.

Summary: Limited studies have been conducted on the effects of toxicity-modifying factors, such as dissolved organic matter (DOM), on the toxicity of metal mixtures to aquatic biota. This study investigated the impact of DOM concentration and source on the chronic toxicity of copper and nickel mixtures to a green freshwater microalga, revealing that the interactions can vary depending on the metal speciation method used.

Effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp) after individual and combined exposure with zinc oxide nanoparticles

Fernanda Neves Estrela et al.

Summary: The study found that short-term exposure to PS NPs affected fish's response to mirror tests, as well as induced inactivity towards alarm substances and DNA damage. Increased oxidative stress was observed, and while antioxidant levels were elevated, they were not sufficient to counteract the effects of free radicals produced by the treatment.

Hydrophobic Surface Coating Can Reduce Toxicity of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles to the Marine Copepod Tigriopus japonicus

Racliffe Weng Seng Lai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the acute and chronic toxicities of coated zinc oxide nanoparticles on a marine copepod, revealing that surface coatings can affect the ion dissolution and zinc bioaccumulation of particles, different hydrophobicity coatings can influence the toxicity of particles, and the toxicity of coated metal-associated nanoparticles can be predicted by the properties of their surface coatings.

Nanoplastics are neither microplastics nor engineered nanoparticles

Julien Gigault et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics have unique characteristics compared to microplastics and engineered nanomaterials, including transportation properties, interactions with natural colloids and light, high proportion of particle molecules on the surface, bioavailability, and diffusion times for plastic additives release. Nanoscale plastics must be considered distinct from both microplastics and engineered nanomaterials.

Molecular Impacts of Dietary Exposure to Nanoplastics Combined or Not with Arsenic in the Caribbean Mangrove Oysters (Isognomon alatus)

Marc Lebordais et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the impacts of three distinct NPs on the Caribbean oyster Isognomon alatus through dietary exposure, revealing significant changes in gene expression in response to NPs and arsenic exposure. The interaction between NPs and As may have a protective effect by reducing surface reactivity of contaminants.
