Prevalence and seasonality of viral respiratory infections in a temperate climate region: A 24-year study (1997-2020)

Summary: This long-term study provides new knowledge about the prevalence and distribution of respiratory viruses in the Mediterranean region. The study period revealed both constant and variable frequencies of different viruses. Some viruses showed clear demographic and seasonal patterns. The findings suggest that patients with severe respiratory infections should be tested for multiple respiratory viruses regardless of gender, age, or season.

Sequence duplication in 3′ UTR modulates virus replication and virulence of Japanese encephalitis virus

Summary: This study reveals the important roles of the stem-loop and dumbbell structures in JEV replication by constructing deletion mutants. Complete deletion of the stem-loop structure significantly reduces virus replication, while the mutant with a duplicated dumbbell structure acquired by replication in mammalian cells restores virus replication capability. However, this mutant shows high attenuation in mice.

Summary: Water temperature plays a crucial role in the outbreaks of fish rhabdovirus diseases. This study investigated the role of piscine rhabdoviral glycoproteins in determining replication temperatures by creating chimeric viruses expressing heterologous glycoproteins. Results indicated that VHSV G protein is a critical factor in determining the limit of replication-possible temperatures in VHSV, while other viral proteins may also be involved in this determination.
