Fungal Cell Factories for Efficient and Sustainable Production of Proteins and Peptides

Mette Lubeck et al.

Summary: Filamentous fungi are a diverse group of microorganisms found worldwide. They are used as cell factories for producing proteins, enzymes, and peptides. Filamentous fungi have advantages such as easy cultivation and high production yield. They are also applied in the food production industry.

Brewer's Spent Dry Yeast Modulates Immunity in Gilthead Sea Bream (Sparus aurata)

Ioannis Konstantinidis et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the replacement of dietary protein sources with Brewer's spent dry yeast (SDY) in gilthead sea bream and found that SDY had a modulatory effect on the host's immunity, oxygen carrier capacity, steroidogenesis, metabolism, and digestion. The results indicate that SDY can be considered as both a sustainable raw material and a functional ingredient.

Brewery by-products (yeast and spent grain) as protein sources in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) feeds

Alicia Estevez et al.

Summary: A trial was conducted to analyze the effect of adding yeast and spent grain in feeds for rainbow trout. The results showed that inclusion of 20% yeast and 15% spent grain in the feed, along with 15% fish meal, resulted in similar growth and muscle composition compared to the control group. The protein digestibility of the ingredients was not affected by hydrolysis.

Dietary brewer's spent yeast enhances growth, hematological parameters, and innate immune responses at reducing fishmeal concentration in the diet of climbing perch, Anabas testudineus fingerlings

M. Gokulakrishnan et al.

Summary: The experiment found that partially replacing fishmeal protein with BSY protein in climbing perch fingerling diet can improve weight gain and food conversion ratios, but performance starts to decline when the replacement ratio reaches a certain level.

Bioactive peptides from yeast: A comparative review on production methods, bioactivity, structure-function relationship, and stability

Mahta Mirzaei et al.

Summary: Yeast cells are a rich source of proteins and bioactive peptides with multiple functionalities. While research on yeast extract has increased, there is a lack of systematic review on the functional properties attributed to bioactive peptides content and production methods. Predicting and designing new peptide sequences can effectively transfer research findings into practical market applications.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.
