Effects of environmental salinity on the immune response of the coastal fish Scatophagus argus during bacterial infection

Mengying Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of environmental salinity on the immune response of Scatophagus argus. The results showed that hypoosmotic stress caused by decreased salinity had suppressive effects on the immune response of S. argus.

Activity, boldness and schooling in freshwater fish are affected by river salinization

Tamara Leite et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing salinity has sub-lethal effects on freshwater fish behavior, including reduced swimming activity and shoal cohesion, as well as an increase in bolder individuals. Changes in fish behavior can reflect shifts in ecological condition.

Modulation of the intestinal barrier adaptive functions in red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) invading brackish waters

Li Ding et al.

Summary: When adapting to brackish water environments, the intestinal barrier of Trachemys scripta elegans plays a protective role in maintaining normal tissue structure. Some genes related to intestinal barrier functions and immune-related genes in the gut were significantly upregulated in high salinity environments, along with certain bacterial taxa being enhanced in the intestinal micro-ecosystem.

Physiological responses of freshwater insects to salinity: molecular-, cellular- and organ-level studies

Sydney Silver et al.

Summary: Salinization of freshwater affects freshwater insects' osmoregulatory physiology, causing stress and impaired development even though they can tolerate it to a certain extent. Further research is needed to understand the physiological mechanisms for controlling salt and water balance in freshwater insects in order to predict the consequences of salinization for freshwater ecosystems.

Toxic effects of ammonia and thermal stress on the intestinal microbiota and transcriptomic and metabolomic responses of Litopenaeus vannamei

Yafei Duan et al.

Summary: Ammonia and thermal stress can impact the intestinal microbiota, immunity, and metabolism of aquatic animals. Stress exposure leads to changes in the intestinal microbiota, including an increase in beneficial bacteria and a decrease in pathogenic bacteria.

Promotion of pellet-feed feeding in mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) by Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus is influenced by immune and intestinal flora

Xiaoli Chen et al.

Summary: Addition of B. bacteriovorus to aquaculture water can significantly promote the pellet-feed feeding of mandarin fish, improve their survival rates and growth performance, as well as regulate intestinal flora and enhance innate immunity.

Long term salinity disrupts the hepatic function, intestinal health, and gills antioxidative status in Nile tilapia stressed with hypoxia

Mahmoud A. O. Dawood et al.

Summary: The study found that the combination of 20%o salinity and hypoxia conditions can lead to decreased growth rate, feed utilization, and survival rate in Nile tilapia, as well as induce inflammatory features. Furthermore, fish exposed to 20%o salinity and hypoxia conditions showed significant changes in various biomarkers levels.

Low shifts in salinity determined assembly processes and network stability of microeukaryotic plankton communities in a subtropical urban reservoir

Yuanyuan Mo et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in salinity alters plankton community composition and decreases diversity. Salinity change influences community assembly through regulating the balance between deterministic and stochastic processes, with higher robustness of core plankton subnetworks at low-salinity levels and satellite subnetworks at medium-/high-salinity levels. The results suggest that even small increases in salinity at low levels can exert selective pressure on microeukaryotic plankton diversity and alter community assembly mechanisms and network stability.

Intestinal Cetobacterium and acetate modify glucose homeostasis via parasympathetic activation in zebrafish

Anran Wang et al.

Summary: Fish have limited capability to utilize carbohydrates compared to mammals. In this study, zebrafish fed with omnivorous and herbivorous diets showed better glucose homeostasis due to enrichment of the commensal bacterium Cetobacterium somerae, which produces acetate. Dietary supplementation of acetate promotes glucose utilization in zebrafish, and the beneficial effect of acetate and C. somerae on glucose homeostasis is mediated through parasympathetic activation. These findings suggest potential strategies for improving fish carbohydrate utilization.
