Shear thickening fluids and their applications

Minghai Wei et al.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review of shear thickening fluids (STFs), including their basic properties, classification, and rheological mechanism evolution. It discusses the factors influencing the shear thickening behavior of STFs and presents several computational models. Furthermore, it summarizes the research progress of STF-based composites in various fields and explores the applications of STFs in energy dissipation.

Influence of particle shape and sample preparation on shear thickening behavior of precipitated calcium carbonate suspensions

Alfredo Bosco et al.

Summary: This study investigated the preparation conditions of suspensions of precipitated calcium carbonate particles and found that samples with rosette PCC particles exhibited stronger shear thickening behavior. Acicular PCC particles also shear thickened at lower shear rates compared to rosette PCC particles.

Processing technology and ballistic-resistant mechanism of shear thickening fluid/high-performance fiber-reinforced composites: A review

Qianyu Zhang et al.

Summary: Shear thickening liquid combined with high-performance fiber can be made into a flexible and lightweight liquid protection device with intelligent mechanical response and energy absorption mechanism, realizing liquid-solid transformation. This composite material has a ballistic-resistant mechanism and properties, and various factors affecting ballistic impact property are discussed for better understanding of the reaction mechanism of materials. Different characterization methods of ballistic properties are considered for the research, development, and application of flexible and intelligent ballistic materials with high responsiveness.

An empirical equation for shear viscosity of shear thickening fluids

Takshak Shende et al.

Summary: This study proposed an empirical equation based on Doolittle's free volume theory to describe the rheological properties of shear-thickening fluids, including relative free volume-dependent viscosity, shear stress-dependent viscosity, shear rate-dependent viscosity, and dimensionless Peclet number-dependent relative viscosity. The formulae have been validated against experimental data, and the results suggest that the predicted threshold material parameters of shear thickening fluids help evaluate the effect of physico-chemical conditions on their rheology. Additionally, flow simulations in a 2D porous medium showed bimodal distribution of pore-scale shear rate, shear viscosity, and velocity.

Exploring the roles of roughness, friction and adhesion in discontinuous shear thickening by means of thermo-responsive particles

Chiao-Peng Hsu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the relative contributions of friction, adhesion, and surface roughness in discontinuous shear thickening can be tuned in situ by modifying temperature, allowing the phenomenon to be switched on and off as needed. By characterizing at the single-colloid level, a more direct way to design smart non-Newtonian fluids is identified.

Effect of striker shape on impact energy absorption of a shear thickening fluid

Jialun Cheng et al.

Summary: This study found that the shape of the striker affects the energy absorption of STF, with flat-head strikers showing higher total impact energy absorption but lower maximum penetration depth compared to cone-shaped strikers. Additionally, as the diameter of the striker increased, the total impact energy absorption also increased with a decrease in penetration depth.
