Phase transition and plastic deformation mechanisms induced by self-rotating grinding of GaN single crystals

Chen Li et al.

Summary: The study explores the deformation and removal mechanisms of gallium nitride (GaN) single crystals during ultra-precision machining. The experimental results show that abrasive size significantly affects the surface morphology and roughness, leading to a transition from brittle fracture-dominated surface to a plastic surface with reduced abrasive size. Through cross-sectional TEM method and MD simulation, it is found that plastic deformation in GaN crystals is caused by the formation of polycrystalline nanocrystals and defects, with an observable delamination phenomenon in the plastic deformation zone.

Enhancing Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy in Garnet Ferrimagnet by Interfacing with Few-Layer WTe2

Guanzhong Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, we report the emergence of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and enhanced Gilbert damping induced by interfacial interactions in a heterostructure made of YIG and WTe2. The ability of WTe2 to enhance PMA in FM thin film, combined with its capability to generate out-of-plane damping like spin torque, makes it desirable for magnetic memory applications.

Anisotropy dependence of material removal and deformation mechanisms during nanoscratch of gallium nitride single crystals on (0001) plane

Chen Li et al.

Summary: Nanoscratch tests on GaN single crystals revealed that crack-free plastic deformation could be achieved along different zone axes, with deeper penetration depth and less phase transformation along the [11-20] zone axis. Higher stress along the [1-100] zone axis induced more phase transition from hexagonal system to cubic system. This study enhances understanding of the anisotropy dependence of material removal and damage mechanisms in GaN crystals.

A novel approach to obtain near damage-free surface/subsurface in machining of single crystal 4H-SiC substrate using pure metal mediated friction

Min Wu et al.

Summary: The high-speed friction-induced removal behavior of single crystal silicon carbide (4H-SiC) by pure metals (iron and nickel) was investigated in this study. The subsurface damage of SiC substrates on both C-face and Si-face was explored. It was found that the C-face SiC substrate had almost no damage, while crystal defects were evidenced on the Si-face SiC substrate. The material removal rate was highest on the Si-face using pure nickel. The formation of silicide and/or oxide indicated that the material removal of both the C-face and Si-face of 4H-SiC was dominated by the friction-induced chemical interaction. A friction reaction-removal model of single crystal 4H-SiC substrate using pure metal was proposed.

Subsurface damage pattern and formation mechanism of monocrystalline β-Ga2O3 in grinding process

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the damage pattern and formation mechanism of monocrystalline beta-Ga2O3 in different grinding processes. Transmission electron microscopy was used to observe the subsurface damage in rough, fme, and ultrafine grinding processes. The results showed that there were nanocrystals and stacking faults in all three processes, while dislocations, twins, cracks, and amorphous phase were present in specific processes. The thickness of subsurface damage decreased with the reduction in the grit radius and the grit depth of cut. The study also established subsurface damage models and found that the formation of nanocrystals and amorphous phase was related to grinding conditions and material characteristics.
