Effect of Microstructure and Hardness on Cavitation Erosion and Dry Sliding Wear of HVOF Deposited CoNiCrAlY, NiCoCrAlY and NiCrMoNbTa Coatings

Miroslaw Szala et al.

Summary: Metallic coatings based on cobalt and nickel show promise in extending the lifespan of machine components in harsh environments. However, there is a lack of research on the tribological and cavitation erosion performance of popular MCrAlY and NiCrMoNbTa coatings. This study comparatively investigates the effects of microstructure and hardness of different coatings on their performance. The results show that the resistance to sliding wear and cavitation erosion increases in the order of NiCoCrAlY < CoNiCrAlY < NiCrMoNbTa. The differences in microstructure affect the wear and cavitation erosion performance more than the hardness itself.

Investigation into microstructure and mechanical properties effects on sliding wear and cavitation erosion of Al2O3-TiO2 coatings sprayed by APS, SPS and S-HVOF

Monika Nowakowska et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of different thermal spray processes and spray feedstock characteristics on the properties of Al2O3-TiO2 coatings. The results showed that increasing hardness, Young's modulus, and the content of α-Al2O3 phase in the coating can decrease the sliding wear rate. Additionally, dense microstructures with high hardness and an increased content of α-Al2O3 phase favored the resistance of coatings to cavitation erosion.

Comparative Analysis of Mechanical Properties of WC-Based Cermet Coatings Sprayed by HVOF onto AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Substrates

Ewa Jonda et al.

Summary: Magnesium alloys are interesting engineering materials due to their high strength to density ratio, but limited by low hardness and resistance to erosion, abrasion, and corrosion. Coating deposition and thermal spraying are proposed to improve mechanical performance. Coatings with different binders and additives were studied, showing that cobalt matrix coatings exhibit higher hardness, Young modulus, and fracture toughness compared to nickel matrix ones.

Microstructure and cavitation erosion behavior of HVOF sprayed ceramic-metal composite coatings for application in hydro-turbines

Summary: In this study, Cr3C2-NiCr and WC-CoCr ceramic-metal coatings were produced using HVOF spraying. It was found that WC-CoCr coatings had higher microhardness and lower porosity compared to Cr3C2-NiCr coatings, resulting in lower cavitation erosion rates. The cavitation erosion mechanisms of the coatings varied at different flow velocities, with Cr3C2-NiCr coatings experiencing removal of chromium carbide particles, crater coalescence, and coating detachment, while WC-CoCr coatings were eroded at the binder phase, cavitation pits interlinked, and WC particles detached at different flow velocities.

Influence of 13 wt% TiO2 content in alumina-titania powders on microstructure, sliding wear and cavitation erosion resistance of APS sprayed coatings

Leszek Latka et al.

Summary: The addition of TiO2 in the powder provides denser microstructure of the coating, improves the contact between splats, prevents severe fragmentation and spallation during wear, and prolongs cavitation lifetime. Generally, AT0 coatings exhibit slightly better wear resistance than AT13 equivalents. However, AT13 coatings present superior cavitation erosion resistance when compared with AT0.

Navneet K. Singh et al.

Summary: WC-NiCr and WC-Hastelloy C coatings were deposited on Monel K-500 substrate using HVOF-spray to enhance the cavitation erosion resistance of the alloy. Both coatings reduced the erosion volume loss of the alloy, with WC-NiCr showing a superior performance due to its better combination of microhardness and fracture toughness. The cavitation erosion in the coatings was characterized by the formation of craters, cavities, and debonding of splats, while microplastic tearing and microcracks were observed as the primary erosion mechanism in Monel K-500.
