Atomic mechanism on the mechanical and tribological performance of amorphous/graphene nanolaminates

Dongpeng Hua et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that introducing graphene to form heterogenous interfaces in amorphous alloys can significantly enhance the mechanical and tribological performance of the material. The mechanical and tribological performance of amorphous/graphene nanolaminates depends largely on the thickness of the amorphous layer, and the interfacial limiting effect of graphene improves the load bearing ability of the nanolaminates.

Effects of structure relaxation and surface oxidation on nanoscopic wear behaviors of metallic glass

Qian Jia et al.

Summary: Both structure relaxation and oxidation of surface layer induced by thermal treatment or friction heat play significant roles in reducing wear of metallic glasses (MGs). The oxidized surface layer exhibits the best anti-wear performance, with significant reductions in both adhesive and ploughing friction, which is attributed to hindered interfacial bonding and enhanced wear resistance.

Summary: The study demonstrates that NbMoWTa/Ag self-lubricating multilayered films can significantly reduce friction while maintaining high hardness. The film properties are strongly dependent on the individual layer thickness, with the most promising properties obtained when the interface structure transforms into a coherent one. This work may open a new route for developing innovative self-lubricating RHEA films with excellent tribological properties.

Mechanical properties and thickness-determined fracture mode of hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets under nanoindentation simulations

Yin Liu et al.

Summary: Hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets h-BNNS are a promising 2D material with exceptional mechanical properties, but the experimentally measured properties show significant variations due to different experimental factors. Through molecular dynamics simulations, this study investigates the impact of experimental factors on h-BNNS mechanical properties, and reveals the evolution of its microstructure during fracture, demonstrating a transition in fracture mode with increasing thickness.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the effect of interaction potentials, substrate size, indenter size, and indentation velocity on hardness and defect generation during nanoindentation of metallic materials using MD simulations. It reveals that the substrate thickness has a significant influence on the measured hardness, while the impact of the indentation velocity is small.

Ultrahigh-strength multi-layer graphene-coated Ni film with interface-induced hardening

Dong Jin Kim et al.

Summary: Graphene-reinforced metal matrix composites offer excellent mechanical properties due to dislocation impedance at the metal-graphene interface. The mechanical properties of multi-layer graphene-coated nickel synthesized by CVD and transfer methods were investigated, showing significant improvements in hardness and Young's modulus. Manipulating the interface property between graphene and metal can lead to ultra-high-strength graphene-coated metal films with potential for thin film resistor applications under external forces.

Summary: Understanding contact-induced behavior in metals is crucial for studying mechanical properties. Nanoindentation studies on CoCrNi MEA revealed unique dislocation nucleation at Cr-rich clusters, contrary to conventional homogeneous nucleation in pure metals. Compositional inhomogeneity and temperature were found to influence defect behavior, with nanotwin formation and phase-transformation promoted at low temperatures.

Summary: In this study, the impact of inclusions on scratching behavior during SiC epitaxy was explored through molecular dynamics modeling. It was found that inclusions significantly affect the microstructure, atomistic behavior, and machinability. Eliminating inclusions requires a high penetration depth, but increases the sensitivity of process parameters.
