Enhanced interfacial bonding strength of laser bonded titanium alloy/CFRTP joint via hydrogen bonds interaction

Caiwang Tan et al.

Summary: The bonding between titanium alloy and carbon fiber reinforced thermal plastic has been widely used in lightweight fabrication. However, the metal-plastic bonded joints are usually weak. In this study, laser joining was performed to enhance the bonding strength by using surface modification techniques such as micro-arc oxidation and silane coupling agent treatment. The results showed that the porous structure created by the micro-arc oxidation process increased the roughness of the titanium alloy surface and promoted mechanical interlocking. Additionally, the silane coupling agent introduced hydrogen bonds between functional groups, significantly improving the interfacial bonded force.

Summary: The study using atom probe tomography revealed that DLIL-treated titanium surface forms a multilayer structure consisting of oxide/oxynitride, with differences in chemical composition between maximum and minimum interference positions. Uneven heating and temperature distribution are believed to cause the observed differences, as demonstrated by thermal simulations.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of additively manufactured surface structures for enhancing the bond strength of metal-polymer hybrid joints, showing competitive initial strengths compared to laser surface structuring; however, it also indicates that hybrid joints with additively manufactured structures are more susceptible to degradation during salt spray testing.
