Why and How Savitzky-Golay Filters Should Be Replaced

Michael Schmid et al.

Summary: This study investigates the issues with the traditional SG filters in smoothing data and calculating derivatives, and proposes two improved filter types. By introducing weighting with window function shape and additional corrections to the sinc function with a Gaussian-like window function, the frequency response of the filters can be greatly improved while maintaining the advantageous properties of SG filters.

Compensation of temperature effects on spectra through evolutionary rank analysis

Andrzej J. Kalka et al.

Summary: The paper presents a simple two-step method for uniformizing thermospectral datasets, compensating for thermal effects on spectra through linear shifting and broadening simulation. The method is validated on UV-Vis spectra of model systems and a two-component conformer system, showing its efficiency in compensating for thermal effects.

Discrete Fourier transform techniques for noise reduction and digital enhancement of analytical signals

M. Farooq Wahab et al.

Summary: This article presents detailed information on problem solving approaches using discrete Fourier transform (DFT) in the context of separation science and spectroscopic data analysis. The methods discussed are effective in denoising, increasing theoretical plates, reducing asymmetry, and resolving isotopically labeled compounds.

Do Spectra Live in the Matrix? A Brief Tutorial on Applications of Factor Analysis to Resolving Spectral Datasets of Mixtures

Andrzej J. Kalka et al.

Summary: The development of computer technology has provided new ways of data processing for chemometrics, yet many methods are not commonly used in laboratory settings. By applying factor analysis to a system of three fluorescent molecules, the composition of an unknown mixture can be accurately determined.
