Response of soil denitrification potential and community composition of denitrifying bacterial to different rates of straw return in north-central China

Xiya Wang et al.

Summary: The results of this study indicate that the rate of straw return significantly affects soil denitrification potential and the community composition of denitrifying bacteria, with increasing straw return rates leading to higher soil DP and abundance of nirK and nirS genes. However, the a-diversity of the denitrifying communities remained unaffected by chemical fertilization and straw rates.

Differentiated responses of nirS- and nirK-type denitrifiers to 30 years of combined inorganic and organic fertilization in a paddy soil

Yadong Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that the abundance and diversity of nirK-type denitrifiers in paddy fields are more sensitive to inorganic and organic mixed fertilization compared to nirS-type denitrifiers. Fertilization significantly altered the proportion of dominant OTUs of both denitrifiers, with total nitrogen and organic carbon correlating with the abundance and community structure of nirK-type denitrifiers.

Characterization of nirS- and nirK-containing communities and potential denitrification activity in paddy soil from eastern China

Yuqin Liang et al.

Summary: Denitrification is crucial for nitrogen balance in agricultural ecosystems. This study examined the differences in nirS- and nirK-harboring microbial communities in paddy soils from different climatic regions. The results showed that denitrification rates were highest in sub-tropical zone soils, with abundances of nirS and nirK varying significantly across climate zones and being influenced by C/N ratio, pH, and climate factors. Network analysis revealed key taxa related to denitrification rates, while structural equation modeling indicated that climate factors and nirS biodiversity primarily explained differences in denitrification potential among the four climate zones. This study emphasized the importance of understanding denitrifier biodiversity for future manipulation experiments.

Variation in abundance, diversity, and composition of nirK and nirS containing denitrifying bacterial communities in a red paddy soil as affected by combined organic-chemical fertilization

Xun Xiao et al.

Summary: The long-term effects of different combined organic-chemical fertilizer regimes on denitrifying communities were investigated in this study. The results showed that the application of combined organic-chemical fertilizers significantly increased the abundance of nirK and nirS genes, with a more pronounced effect in the GM treatment. In addition, changes in soil pH and organic matter were identified as key factors influencing the abundance and composition of the denitrifying communities.

Effects of combined application of acidified biogas slurry and chemical fertilizer on crop production and N soil fertility

Summary: Field studies evaluating the efficiency of anaerobic digestates (AD) as fertilizers are affected by various factors, with the effects on crop growth depending on soil characteristics. Soil properties have a significant impact on crop parameters, with nitrogen utilization negatively correlated to the initial mineral nitrogen content in the soil.

A few key nirK- and nosZ-denitrifier taxa play a dominant role in moisture-enhanced N2O emissions in acidic paddy soil

Hongling Qin et al.

Summary: This study showed that denitrification may play a more dominant role in N2O emissions than nitrification in acidic paddy soil under sufficient NH4NO3 inputs. The effects of soil moisture on N2O emissions could be attributed to a few key nirK- and nosZ-denitrifier taxa, through shifts in community composition and synergistic interactions of network structures between them.

Summary: The application of biogas slurry significantly increased total organic carbon content in the soil, especially in the topsoil and at depths of 20-40 cm. The soil bacterial community was more complex under biogas slurry application, while the fungal community showed the opposite trend.

Roles of bulk and rhizosphere denitrifying bacteria in denitrification from paddy soils under straw return condition

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that under straw return conditions, denitrification bacteria in bulk soil showed a positive response to straw addition, leading to an increase in N2O emission potentials. In contrast, straw addition inhibited the growth of denitrifying bacteria in the rhizosphere, resulting in decreased N2O emission potentials at the end of incubation. These results suggest a shift in the roles of bulk and rhizosphere denitrifying bacteria with straw addition.
