THz time-domain characterization of amplifying quantum-cascade metasurface

Summary: An amplifying quantum-cascade (QC) metasurface, a key component of the QC vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting-laser (VECSEL), was studied using reflection-mode terahertz time domain spectroscopy. Perfect absorption at zero bias, increase in reflectance with bias, and significant phase modulation associated with metasurface resonance were observed. The results provide insight into the interaction between intersubband QC-gain material and metasurface, and modify the design rules for biased and unbiased QC-VECSELs.

Controlling Quantum Cascade Laser Optical Frequency Combs through Microwave Injection

Summary: This work demonstrates the control of the emitted state from quantum cascade laser frequency combs through strong radio-frequency current modulation, achieving adjustments in spectral bandwidth and center frequency. Different spectral characteristics can be achieved at different modulation frequencies, allowing for the generation of multiple spectral regions on the same device.

Self-starting harmonic comb emission in THz quantum cascade lasers

Summary: Harmonic comb states have been found to be prevalent in mid-IR quantum cascade lasers. This study reports on robust, pure, self-starting harmonic mode locking in Copper-based double-metal THz quantum cascade lasers, which can excite different harmonic orders and show stable harmonic combs spanning over 600GHz. The devices can be RF injected, and the free running coherence is assessed using a self-mixing technique performed at 50GHz.

Comb operation in terahertz quantum cascade ring lasers

Summary: Ring resonators are an interesting alternative cavity solution for THz quantum cascade lasers, exhibiting different emission regimes depending on the presence of defects in the cavity. The results show complex behavior and highlight the strong confinement and optical nonlinearities effects in these devices, leading to the generation of harmonic states and fundamental comb over a wide bandwidth.
