Targeting mitochondria for cancer photodynamic therapy

Muhammad Danish Yaqoob et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a noninvasive therapeutic modality that uses light to target mitochondria, which plays a crucial role in cancer and anticancer therapy. Mitochondria-targeting sensitizers, such as IR-730 and IR-Pyr, have shown promise in improving the efficacy of PDT for solid tumors.

Secure transplantation by tissue purging using photodynamic therapy to eradicate malignant cells

Saeid Moghassemi et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has gained attention as a selective and minimally invasive cancer therapy strategy. It selectively activates reactive oxygen species (ROS) through the use of photosensitizers (PS), resulting in direct malignant cell death. This makes it a potential ex vivo tissue purging protocol.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Current Strategies for Tumor Photodynamic Therapy Combined With Immunotherapy

Jianfeng Hua et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and immunotherapy each have their own advantages and limitations, but their efficacy against cancer can be improved through combination strategies. By inducing immunogenic cell death or using immune adjuvants, inhibitors of immune suppression, and immune checkpoint blockade, the antitumor effects of PDT and immunotherapy can be enhanced.
