Lipid accumulation patterns and role of different fatty acid types towards mitigating salinity fluctuations in Chlorella vulgaris

Kit Yinn Teh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adaptive changes of mangrove-isolated C. vulgaris UMT-M1 under different salinity levels and found that cultures at 15 ppt salinity exhibited the highest total oil content. Furthermore, the study highlighted the importance of various fatty acid types during different growth phases, shedding light on the potential of triggered oil accumulation in mangrove-dwelling microalgae.

Potential of microalgae as a sustainable feed ingredient for aquaculture

Senthil Nagappan et al.

Summary: The aquaculture industry is growing rapidly, and with it, the demand for aquafeed is also increasing. Traditional feed ingredients like fish meal and terrestrial plants are facing sustainability and environmental issues. Therefore, alternative and environmentally sustainable sources of feed ingredients, such as microalgae biomass, are being explored for their potential in aquaculture.

Dynamism of Metabolic Carbon Flow of Starch and Lipids in Chlamydomonas debaryana

Naoki Sato et al.

Summary: Research on microalgae reveals the rapid and transient de novo synthesis of starch and lipids, almost independent of each other, with a pool of starch quickly turning over for fatty acid synthesis. Fatty acids undergo re-synthesis, and evidence suggests lipid remodeling by re-using acyl groups for TAG synthesis.

Long-term survival of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii during conditional senescence

Djihane Yushrina Damoo et al.

Summary: Chlamydomonas reinhardtii undergoes conditional senescence in batch culture due to nutrient limitation. During a long-term ageing experiment, it was found that despite a decline in cell viability over time, cells continued to divide through the recycling of macromolecules. Declines in chlorophyll and protein content, along with the upregulation of light stress-related proteins, contribute to an efficient energy dissipation mechanism to protect ageing cells from photooxidative stress.

Microalgae as Contributors to Produce Biopolymers

Rozita Madadi et al.

Summary: Biopolymers are favorable materials produced by living organisms, with properties like biodegradability, renewability, and biocompatibility, which are considered to compete with fossil-based polymeric materials, raising environmental concerns. Biobased plastics are gaining interest for various applications and can be produced from biological sources. Microalgae and cyanobacteria are promising sources for producing bioplastics, with potential in PHAs, cellulose, carbohydrates, and proteins. This review aims to summarize the potential of microalgal compounds for bioplastic production and offers insights for a circular economy approach.

Toxic effects of chtorpyrifos, cypermethrin and glyphosate on the non-target organism Selenastrum Capricornutum (Chlorophyta)

Carolina Fernandez et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the toxic effects of the insecticides chlorpyrifos and cypermethrin, and the herbicide glyphosate on the green microalgae Selenastrum capricornutum. All three pesticides significantly reduced population growth and caused an increase in cell size with exposure time and concentration. Damage to cell ultrastructure included disruption of thylakoids and mitochondria, formation of electrodense bodies, lipid accumulation, and increased starch granules. The study highlights the ecological implications of pesticide effects on non-target organisms.
