Kaimal spectrum based H2 optimization of tuned mass dampers for wind turbines

Somya Ranjan Patro et al.

Summary: The closed-form analytical expression of the objective function for a single degree of freedom system with a tuned mass damper subjected to Gaussian white noise and Kaimal forcing spectrum is derived using the H-2 optimization technique. The concept of a near identity spectrum is introduced to approximate the Kaimal spectrum, and the results show that optimizing the tuned mass damper system according to the Kaimal spectrum yields better performance compared to optimization with Gaussian white noise.

Flexural Wave Propagation in Rigid Elastic Combined Metabeam

Abhigna Bhatt et al.

Summary: This paper studies the flexural wave propagation, attenuation, and reflection through a finite number of rigid elastic combined metabeam (RECM) elements sandwiched between two Euler Bernoulli beams using the spectral element, inverse Fourier transform, and transfer matrix method. The spectral element method is formulated for the unit representative cell of RECM employing rigid body dynamics. The sensitivity analysis reveals the influence of non-dimensional parameters, such as mass ratio, length ratio, and rotary inertia ratio, on the attenuation profile. The rotary inertia of the rigid body produces a local resonance band that can bridge the gap between two Bragg scattering bands, resulting in an ultra-wide stop band for specific non-dimensional parameters.

Enhanced low-frequency vibration energy harvesting with inertial amplifiers

Sondipon Adhikari et al.

Summary: A mechanical approach utilizing inertial amplifiers with cantilever piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters has been proposed to address challenges in harvesting more power from low-frequency and broadband random excitations. Optimal tuning of different parameters of the inertial amplifiers can significantly increase harvested power, allowing for five times more power to be harvested at a 50% lower frequency under harmonic excitation and ten times more power under random broadband excitation.

Stability and performance of supercritical inerter-based active vibration isolation systems

D. Cakmak et al.

Summary: This paper presents an analytical study on stability and performance of supercritical linear active vibration isolation systems, showing that including an optimized inerter in the isolator can introduce instabilities in an otherwise unconditionally stable active system and deteriorate isolator performance. By serial dashpot/inerter arrangement and simultaneous optimization, improved performance may be achieved.

Double attenuation peaks in metamaterial with simultaneous negative mass and stiffness

Abhigna Bhatt et al.

Summary: In this letter, an additional feature, namely double attenuation peak, of simultaneous negative mass and stiffness metamaterial has been identified. The generation of double attenuation peaks is hinged upon the resonance coupling of longitudinal and transverse resonator, ensuring a significant level of spatial attenuation throughout the attenuation band.

Summary: This study investigates the analysis and optimization of inerter-based systems, focusing on the H(infinity) optimum parameters of inerter-based isolators to minimize compliance and mobility transfer functions under harmonic ground acceleration excitation. The results show significant improvements in compliance and mobility transfer functions compared to traditional dynamic vibration absorbers, especially in series-parallel inerter systems. This study provides a theoretical basis for designing optimal inerter-based isolators in engineering applications.

A reduced modal subspace approach for damped stochastic dynamic systems

S. Kasinos et al.

Summary: A novel method is proposed for characterizing and propagating system uncertainty in structures subjected to dynamic actions, reducing the number of random variables and the size of the dynamic problem by defining random quantities in the modal subspace. A numerical procedure is presented for identifying modal shapes, frequencies, and damping ratios by calibrating their probabilistic definition in line with the geometrical space. High-order perturbation technique and polynomial chaos expansion approach are used to quantify multi-fidelity response and complement second-moment analysis for spectral quantification with modal subspace reduction, demonstrating improved performance and flexibility.

Summary: This paper presents an optimal design procedure for a pendulum tuned mass damper (PTMD) to mitigate the global structural vibrations of offshore wind turbines (OWTs) using MATLAB program and ANSYS 3D finite element model to calculate and evaluate. The parameters of the PTMD are optimized using a genetic algorithm to minimize the peak response of the primary structure, and the performance of the PTMD is examined on a 3D global FE model.
