Combustion system optimization for the integration of e-fuels (Oxymethylene Ether) in compression ignition engines

Ricardo Novella et al.

Summary: This study presents a numerical methodology for optimizing the combustion chamber of compression ignited engines using OME as fuel, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce NOx emissions. By integrating optimization algorithm and CFD codes, an optimized combustion system was developed, leading to a 2.2% increase in efficiency and 35.7% reduction in NOx emissions compared to baseline engines. The influence of EGR rate and injection pressure on emissions and efficiency was revealed through neural network training.

Reduction of maritime GHG emissions and the potential role of E-fuels

Elizabeth Lindstad et al.

Summary: Maritime transport accounts for around 3% of global anthropogenic Greenhouse gas emissions, and must be reduced by at least 50% by 2050 to align with the goals of the Paris agreement. Zero carbon fuels made from renewable sources are seen as the most promising option for achieving this reduction. Using dual-fuel engines and systems to ensure flexibility in fuel selection is considered the most robust path to these fuels.

Global perspective on CO2 emissions of electric vehicles

Alexandra Maertz et al.

Summary: Plug-in electric vehicles are a promising option for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector, but the environmental assessment needs to consider the changing carbon emissions in electricity provision, and the issue of up-stream emissions remains unresolved. Research findings suggest that early adoption of PEVs is the most effective way to utilize the remaining carbon budget.

Investigation on combustion characteristics of cyclopentanol/diesel fuel blends in an optical engine

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that cyclopentanol has a significant impact on combustion characteristics, prolonging ignition delay, shortening combustion duration, and improving indicated thermal efficiency. Compared to diesel, cyclopentanol blends perform better in reducing peak combustion pressures and peak heat release rates, effectively reducing soot emissions.

Simultaneous high-speed spectroscopy and 2-color pyrometry analysis in an optical compression ignition engine fueled with OME X -diesel blends

Summary: Blending OME X with diesel can help overcome some limitations of OME X while maintaining low soot formation trends. The flame light intensity scales with diesel fraction up to 30% in the blend, and spectroscopy analysis shows nearly zero soot formation for OME X fuel.

Combustion Study of Polyoxymethylene Dimethyl Ethers and Diesel Blend Fuels on an Optical Engine

Jingjing He et al.

Summary: Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE) are a newly emerged oxygenated alternative that can greatly reduce soot emissions from diesel engines. In this study, the combustion characteristics of PODE and diesel blends were investigated under various injection timings and pressures using an optical engine. The results showed that increasing the PODE ratio in the blends decreased ignition delay and combustion duration, but also led to a reduction in heat release rate, cylinder pressure and temperature due to the lower heating value of PODE. Moreover, the addition of PODE in diesel significantly reduced both natural flame luminosity and soot formation, with a 20% PODE blend showing the best overall combustion and soot reduction characteristics.
