Environmental identity economics: an application to farmers' pro-environmental investment behaviour

Kahsay Haile Zemo et al.

Summary: This study proposes an environmental identity economics theory to improve understanding of pro-environmental behaviour, and tests its potential by analyzing farmers' decisions to invest in renewable energy production. The findings show that farmers with a strong environmental identity require less financial incentive to invest and lower compensation is sufficient to induce them to commit to more binding investment contracts. These results highlight the importance of differentiated designs of agri-environmental programmes and mechanisms that enhance farmers' environmental identity.

Environmental Adaptation of Risk Preferences

Summary: This study investigates the risk preferences of subsistence farmers in Ethiopia and their adaptation to rainfall shocks. The findings show that rainfall shocks decrease risk tolerance over time for the same individuals. Additionally, historical rainfall characteristics and geographical features explain 40% of the variation in preferences across individuals. The time-changing effects are in line with the geographical effects, providing real-world evidence that preferences may systematically adapt to the environment of the decision maker.
