Jinrui Ye et al.

Summary: The R-curve and bridging traction-separation relation are important for understanding large scale fibre bridging behavior during delamination growth process. This study proposes a simple semi-analytical method that requires only experimentally recorded load and displacement to determine these relationships. The method avoids the need for complex devices or visual measurements, providing a more efficient and reliable approach for characterizing delamination behavior.

Fatigue behavior of 2.5D woven composites based on the first-order bending vibration tests

Yana Wang et al.

Summary: The fatigue behavior of 2.5D woven composites was investigated in this study. It was found that rapid damage evolution occurred under high stress levels, while crack growth showed arrest behavior under low stress levels. Based on experimental data, a residual stiffness model and an epsilon-N curve formula were established, providing guidance for the design and analysis of 2.5D woven composites.

Mode II fatigue delamination behaviour of composite multidirectional laminates and the stress ratio effect

Chaoqi Liu et al.

Summary: Shear-dominated delamination is a common type of damage in composite laminates. Understanding the fatigue delamination growth (FDG) behavior in mode II is crucial for damage tolerance design. This study investigates the FDG behavior of multidirectional laminates, considering the effects of fiber bridging and stress ratio. A FDG model is proposed to characterize these combined effects, and the proposed model is validated by experimental data and previous literature results.

Yu Gong et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of temperature on mode I delamination behaviors were investigated. It was found that temperature has a significant impact on fracture toughness, bridging stress, and failure mechanism. More bridging fibers were observed at higher temperatures, resulting in a significant increase in fracture resistance. A numerical framework based on the cohesive zone model was established for delamination modeling, and good agreement with experimental results was achieved.

Delamination in carbon fiber epoxy DCB laminates with different stacking sequences: R-curve behavior and bridging traction-separation relation

Yu Gong et al.

Summary: The effects of stacking sequence on the R-curve and traction-separation relation in unidirectional and multidirectional CFRP DCB laminates were systematically investigated, showing strong influence on fiber bridging length, steady-state fracture toughness, and maximum bridging stress. However, there was no clear relationship between these factors and the stacking sequence. The obtained traction-separation relations were successfully integrated into a tri-linear cohesive zone model and numerical results agreed well with test results, demonstrating applicability for delamination modeling in composite laminates with fiber bridging effects.

On the R-curve and cohesive law of glass/epoxy end-notch flexure specimens with 0//θ interface fiber angles

M. Salamat-Talab et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of interface fiber angles on R-curve characteristics and cohesive law shape by fabricating and testing laminated composites with different interface fiber angles. The results showed that crack growth behavior becomes more stable with increasing interface fiber angle, leading to a significant drop in maximum bearable load and approximately identical delamination toughness propagation. The cohesive zone model with proposed linear-exponential softening behavior can accurately estimate load-displacement response of samples displaying pronounced R-curve behavior.

Finite element modeling of mode I fatigue delamination growth in composites under large-scale fiber bridging

F. Teimouri et al.

Summary: In this study, the fatigue damage models by Turon et al. and Kawashita-Hallett are extended with a trilinear cohesive law to simulate mode I fatigue delamination in composites with large-scale fiber bridging. The trilinear CZMs are found to be more accurate than bilinear CZMs in predicting fatigue delamination with fiber bridging effects, as validated by finite element analyses and experimental data comparisons. Additionally, a parametric study was conducted to investigate the sensitivity of the extended models to fitting parameters and quasi-static CZM parameters.

The model was based on fatigue driving force and fatigue delamination resistance, which showed good agreements between predictions and experimental results for different stress ratios. This model's applicability was further indicated by obtaining a single master curve from various fatigue data under different stress ratios and fiber bridging effects.

Comparison of calculations of energy release rates for DCB multi-directional laminate specimens

Leslie Banks-Sills et al.

Summary: The double cantilever beam specimen is commonly used to measure the mode I fracture toughness of laminate composites, with standards available for testing unidirectional materials and extensively used for multi-directional laminates. Expressions for calculating the energy release rate in different situations such as symmetric arm heights and varying moduli have been presented, showing good agreement in results. This study aims to compare these expressions to finite element analyses and demonstrates the potential for using simple formulas instead of complex finite element analyses by considering different specimen arm heights and stiffnesses.
