Catalytic Hydrogenation/Hydrogenolysis of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Dimethylfuran

Paivi Maki-Arvela et al.

Summary: Recent advances in the transformation of biobased 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-dimethylfuran, a potential liquid fuel, have been critically summarized. The highest yields were obtained using bimetallic Cu-Co supported on carbon or Ni supported on mesoporous carbon under specific reaction conditions. The ideal catalyst should have high metal dispersion and some acidity to promote both hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis, while minimizing the formation of byproducts.

Formic Acid-Assisted Selective Hydrogenolysis of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Dimethylfuran over Bifunctional Pd Nanoparticles Supported on N-Doped Mesoporous Carbon

Bin Hu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an efficient method for the hydrogenolysis of HMF to DMF under mild reaction conditions using Pd nanoparticles supported on N-containing and N-free mesoporous carbon materials, along with formic acid (FA) and hydrogen. It was found that the main role of FA is to shift the dominant reaction pathway from the hydrogenation of the aldehyde group to the hydrogenolysis of the hydroxymethyl group, thereby significantly enhancing the reaction rate. The interaction between Pd2+ species and pyridine-like N atoms was shown to enhance the selective hydrogenolysis of the C-OH bond in the presence of FA, leading to the stabilization of H-.

Phase tuning of ZrO2 supported cobalt catalysts for hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-dimethylfuran under mild conditions

Tianci Xiao et al.

Summary: The crystal structure of catalyst support plays a significant role in influencing its surface and electronic properties, thereby affecting catalytic activity. By preparing monoclinic, tetragonal, and mixed phase Co/ZrO2 catalysts, different hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis activities were observed in the conversion of HMF to DMF. The interaction between cobalt and t-ZrO2 resulted in higher hydrogenation activity, while the presence of acid concentration on the surface of Co/m-ZrO2 led to higher efficiency in hydrogenolysis reactions. The combination of high hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis activities in Co/Mix-ZrO2 achieved the highest yield of DMF under mild conditions.
