New insight into the codon usage and medium optimization toward stable and high-level 5-aminolevulinic acid production in Escherichia coli

Tzu-Hsuan Yu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that codon adaptation index and tRNA adaptation index influence the expression level and folding of recombinant ALAS gene in E. coli. Genomic integration and co-expression of chaperone helped increase 5-ALA production in E. coli. Addition of ferric ion during continuous culture boosted cell growth and 5-ALA production.

The regulation of shrimp metabolism by the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV)

Ramya Kumar et al.

Summary: For over three decades, infectious diseases have caused significant economic losses in the global shrimp industry, with white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) being one of the deadliest pathogens. WSSV modulates host metabolism by affecting glycolysis, TCA cycle, glutaminolysis, and lipid metabolism, with the PI3K-Akt-mTOR pathway playing a critical role in activating the WSSV-induced Warburg effect. Understanding these metabolic pathways and signaling mechanisms is crucial for developing effective anti-WSSV strategies.

Luteolin in Lonicera japonica inhibits the proliferation of white spot syndrome virus in the crayfish Procambarus clarkii

Hai-Feng Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, the efficacy of 12 herbal medicines in inhibiting the proliferation of White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) was evaluated. Lonicera japonica extract was found to have the strongest inhibitory effect, and luteolin (LUT) was identified as the major bioactive compound. LUT showed a strong inhibitory effect on WSSV replication, decreased viral load, and increased the survival rate of WSSV-infected crayfish. It also modulated the expression of immunerelated genes, antioxidants, proinflammatory factors, and apoptosis-related genes.

Economic loss due to diseases in Indian shrimp farming with special reference to Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV)

Prasanna Kumar Patil et al.

Summary: Economic loss due to diseases such as EHP and WSSV in Indian shrimp farming was estimated through a questionnaire-based survey, with WSSV causing the highest production loss but EHP contributing significantly as well despite lower occurrence probability. National revenue loss was higher for EHP compared to WSSV due to higher occurrence probability in key shrimp farming states. The study highlighted the need for better management practices and biosecurity protocols in Indian shrimp farming to reduce both direct and indirect losses.

Recent insights into anti-WSSV immunity in crayfish

Ling-ke Liu et al.

Summary: White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is the most severe viral pathogen for farmed crustaceans, causing significant economic losses globally. Research on WSSV is hindered by the lack of suitable crustacean cell lines for propagation and incomplete host genomes annotations. Recent studies in crayfish have revealed new cellular events related to WSSV infection and immune responses, providing insights for potential antiviral drug development in crustacean farming.
