Thiamine deficiency in Gambian women of reproductive age

Megan W. Bourassa et al.

Summary: Thiamine deficiency disorders can affect the nervous and cardiovascular systems, and are not just limited to South Asia but also observed in free-living populations in West Africa. A study found that the risk of thiamine deficiency was significantly higher during the wet season compared to the dry season in West Africa.

Randomised trial of intravenous thiamine and/or magnesium sulphate administration on erythrocyte transketolase activity, lactate concentrations and alcohol withdrawal scores

Donogh Maguire et al.

Summary: Alcohol withdrawal syndrome occurs in 2% of patients admitted to U.K. hospitals. The routine treatment includes thiamine and benzodiazepines. However, the use of magnesium in conjunction with thiamine has not been widely adopted in clinical practice, despite laboratory studies indicating the importance of magnesium for thiamine's optimal activity.

Erythrocyte transketolase activity coefficient (ETKAC) assay protocol for the assessment of thiamine status

Kerry S. Jones et al.

Summary: Vitamin B1, or thiamine, is an essential nutrient that plays a critical role in energy metabolism. Lack of thiamine can lead to conditions like beriberi, but clinical symptoms are not specific, making it difficult to diagnose. The ETK activity assay, measuring the activity of transketolase, has been used for over 50 years as a sensitive and specific biomarker for thiamine status.

Thiamine deficiency disorders: a clinical perspective

Taryn J. Smith et al.

Summary: Thiamine deficiency, a crucial issue affecting multiple systems, requires early diagnosis and treatment to prevent misdiagnosis and missed opportunities. Future research efforts should focus on determining effective treatment strategies for thiamine deficiency disorders.

Thiamine supplementation holds neurocognitive benefits for breastfed infants during the first year of life

Jeffrey R. Measelle et al.

Summary: The study found that women relying on rice-based diets may have insufficient thiamine intake, putting breastfed infants at risk of thiamine deficiency. Investigating the impact of maternal thiamine supplementation doses, the research found that a high dose of thiamine benefited infants' language development significantly, but had generally no significant effects on motor or visual reception development.

The relation between acute changes in the systemic inflammatory response and circulating thiamine and magnesium concentrations after elective knee arthroplasty

Donogh Maguire et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between acute changes in the systemic inflammatory response (SIR) and thiamine and magnesium dependent enzyme activity in patients undergoing elective knee arthroplasty. The findings showed that pre-operatively TDP and magnesium concentrations were normal, but post-operatively TDP concentrations increased while magnesium concentrations decreased. Thiamine and magnesium could be potentially modifiable therapeutic targets to modulate the host inflammatory response.
