Mechanistic Insights about the Ligand-Enabled Oxy-arylation/vinylation of Alkenes via Au(I)/Au(III) Catalysis

Mathilde Rigoulet et al.

Summary: The mechanism of oxy-arylation/vinylation of alkenes catalyzed by (MeDalphos)AuCl complex was investigated using density functional theory (DFT). Key intermediates, (P,N)Au(Ph)(2+) and (P,N)Au(vinyl)(2+), were identified as responsible for the activation of alkenols and their cyclization through outer-sphere nucleophilic attack of oxygen. The regioselectivity difference observed experimentally between 4-penten-1-ol, (E) and (Z)-4-hexen-1-ols was successfully reproduced by comparing the 5-exo and 6-endo paths. It was found that the coordination mode of the alkenol to gold (eta(2) or eta(1)) could offer a simple way to predict the favored cyclization path.
