Directional takeoff, aerial righting, and adhesion landing of semiaquatic springtails

Victor M. Ortega-Jimenez et al.

Summary: Springtails are capable of performing directional jumps, rapid aerial righting, and near-perfect landing on water surfaces. They achieve these locomotive controls by adjusting body attitude and impulse during takeoff, deforming their body in midair, and utilizing the hydrophilicity of their ventral tube. In midair, they curve their bodies to leverage aerodynamic forces, achieving the fastest ever measured righting response in animals. A stable equilibrium is facilitated by the water adhered to their ventral tube. These biophysical principles were validated in a bioinspired jumping robot, demonstrating their importance for survival.
