Upcycling Plastic Wastes into Value-Added Products by Heterogeneous Catalysis

Tian Tan et al.

Summary: Plastics play important roles in modern society, but their landfilling and discarding as waste contribute to environmental pollution and carbon loss, posing high risks to ecosystems and human health. Current physical recycling methods are limited to thermoplastic recycling and suffer from quality deterioration. Catalytic upcycling has emerged as a promising strategy to treat plastic waste by upgrading it into value-added products under mild conditions. This review highlights recent advances in the development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts and useful strategies for upcycling plastics into various valuable chemicals and materials.

The Critical Role of Process Analysis in Chemical Recycling and Upcycling of Waste Plastics

Scott R. Nicholson et al.

Summary: There is a pressing need to develop new technologies for the circularity of synthetic polymers due to the accumulation of waste plastics and their impact on climate change. Chemical recycling offers a promising solution by converting waste plastics into molecular intermediates for remanufacturing. This paper defines classes of chemical recycling and upcycling and presents general process concepts for the recycling of mixed plastics waste. A framework for techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment is also provided to evaluate the effectiveness of different recycling approaches.

Circularity in mixed-plastic chemical recycling enabled by variable rates of polydiketoenamine hydrolysis

Jeremy Demarteau et al.

Summary: Chemical circularity in mixed-polymer recycling becomes possible by controlling the rates of depolymerization of polydiketoenamines (PDK) through molecular engineering. The stepwise deconstruction of mixed-PDK is chemospecific, allowing the recovery of a certain subset of materials in their pristine condition during the recycling process.

Closed-loop chemical recycling of thermosetting polymers and their applications: a review

Yanlin Liu et al.

Summary: This review discusses the closed-loop recycling of novel thermosets, including hydrolysis recycling and dynamic reaction recycling. Hydrolysis recycling allows recovered thermosets to have the same structure and properties as the original resin, but improving monomer recovery remains a challenge. Dynamic reaction recycling enables 100% recovery rate, but at the cost of lower performance of the recovered resin.
