Synthesis and Linker-Controlled Self-Assembly of Dendritic Amphiphiles with Branched Fluorinated Tails

Abhishek Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: Amphiphiles containing fluorinated segments form structures of lower curvature in aqueous solution, which allows for better visualization of their high electron density in cryo-TEM. A modular approach has been developed for the synthesis of nonionic branched amphiphiles, and the aggregation behavior of these structures has been investigated using DLS and cryo-TEM. The results show the formation of multivesicular and multilamellar vesicles, as well as smaller unilamellar vesicles. Furthermore, cell viability tests demonstrate the low toxicity of these nanoarchitectures for potential biomedical applications.

Supramolecular Engineering of Alkylated, Fluorinated, and Mixed Amphiphiles

Rashmi Rashmi et al.

Summary: The rational design of perfluorinated amphiphiles and their assembly behavior in an aqueous medium are studied in this research. Six novel non-ionic amphiphiles with mixed alkylated and perfluorinated segments are synthesized and their physical properties are investigated. Experimental measurements, theoretical investigations, and molecular dynamics simulations are used to explore the assembly mechanisms and morphological behavior of these amphiphiles in water. The results provide a systematic understanding and new directions for the design of amphiphilic systems.

Janus-Type Dendrimers Based on Highly Branched Fluorinated Chains with Tunable Self-Assembly and 19F Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Properties

Marta Rosati et al.

Summary: Tuning the self-assembly behavior of dendritic amphiphiles is a challenge for designing advanced nanomaterials. In this study, a new family of fluorinated Janus-type dendrimers (FJDs) was synthesized and their self-assembly behavior in water was investigated.

Effect of Perfluorinated Side-Chain Length on the Morphology, Hydrophobicity, and Stability of Xerogel Coatings

Pin-Wei Lee et al.

Summary: The length of perfluorinated side chains has a significant effect on the properties and stability of superhydrophobic xerogel coatings, with higher fluorination levels leading to lower surface energies. The different lengths of perfluorinated ponytails influence the morphology and roughness of the coatings, thereby affecting their hydrophobicity and mechanical durability. CF7, CF9, and CF10 surfaces demonstrate consistent hydrophobicity and coating durability after repetitive flushing tests.

Functional Surfactants for Molecular Fishing, Capsule Creation, and Single-Cell Gene Expression

Mohammad Suman Chowdhury et al.

Summary: This study introduces an oxidation-responsive precursor for creating multifunctional surfactants, which can stabilize microfluidics-generated aqueous droplets, encapsulate different components, enable extraction of biomolecules, fabrication of microcapsules, and monitoring of single-cell gene expression. The development of multifunctional surfactants presents opportunities for a wide range of applications in adsorption, bioanalytics, catalysis, formulations, coatings, and programmable emulsions.

Dissecting the packing forces in mixed perfluorocarbon/aromatic co-crystals

Marco Saccone et al.

Summary: The study systematically evaluated the packing forces in co-crystals using single crystal X-ray diffraction and theoretical analysis. The molecules in the co-crystals assembled through a combination of halogen bonding and specific dispersive interactions involving perfluorinated units. The nature and strength of these interactions were quantitatively elucidated through solid-state calculations and Hirshfeld surface analysis.

Linear triglycerol-based fluorosurfactants show high potential for droplet-microfluidics-based biochemical assays

Mohammad Suman Chowdhury et al.

Summary: This study designed, synthesized, and characterized four different types of fluorosurfactants, and found that the spatial geometry and polarity of the head group have significant impacts on the performance of fluorosurfactants in microfluidic droplets. Meanwhile, a method to improve the user-friendliness of fluorosurfactants was proposed through the research on their performance in microfluidic droplets.
