Rubidium and caesium aluminyls: synthesis, structures and reactivity in C-H bond activation of benzene

Thomas X. Gentner et al.

Summary: This study reports the rubidium and caesium aluminyls, completing the set of metal aluminyls in group 1 (Li-Cs) and expanding knowledge of low valent aluminium chemistry. The compounds form contacted dimeric pairs supported by pi(arene) interactions and exhibit a pronounced twist between aluminyl units. Interestingly, the Cs aluminyl enables C-H bond activation of benzene, while the Rb aluminyl does not, highlighting the significance of alkali metal in these heterobimetallic systems.

Stepwise reduction of a base-stabilised ferrocenyl aluminium(iii) dihalide for the synthesis of structurally-diverse dialane species

Debabrata Dhara et al.

Summary: This study reports the reduction of bulky ferrocenyl-based NHC-stabilised aluminium(iii) diiodide in different hydrocarbon solvents, with different outcomes observed in hexane and aromatic solvents. Reduction in hexane led to C-H activation, while reduction in aromatic solvents resulted in unknown Birch-type reductions of solvent molecules.

A Free Aluminylene with Diverse σ-Donating and σ/π-Doubly Accepting Ligand Features for Transition Metals

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel free N-aluminylene, carbazolylaluminylene 2b, was synthesized and characterized. The coordination behavior of 2b towards transition metal centers was investigated, revealing diverse coordination modes and the ability to modulate electronic properties without changing coordinated atoms. Furthermore, an unprecedented aluminylene-alumanyl transformation was observed, leading to the formation of a rare terminal Cu-alumanyl complex 8. The electronic structures of these complexes and the mechanism of transformation were studied through density functional theory calculations.

Matthew J. Evans et al.

Summary: This study successfully converts contacted dimeric pairs of aluminyl compounds to monomeric ion pairs and separated ion pairs by controlling the Al-M interaction with appropriate chelating reagents. The process was successful for group 1 metals Li, Na, and K, demonstrating the controllability of the interaction through the use of chelating reagents.

Probing the Extremes of Covalency in M-Al bonds: Lithium and Zinc Aluminyl Compounds

Matthew M. D. Roy et al.

Summary: Synthetic routes to lithium, magnesium, and zinc aluminyl complexes were reported, with the first structural characterization of an unsupported lithium-aluminium bond. Crystallographic and quantum-chemical studies revealed a highly polar Li-Al interaction with a low bond order and relatively little charge transfer from Al to Li. Comparison with magnesium and zinc aluminyl systems showed changes to both the M-Al bond and the (NON)Al fragment, indicating a more covalent character in the latter complex, which was shown to react with CO2 via a pathway where the zinc centre acts as the nucleophilic partner.

Dispersion Stabilizes Metal-Metal Bonds in the 1,8-Bis(silylamido)naphthalene Ligand Environment

Nicholas J. Roberts et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of using bulky substituents to stabilize weak bonds, revealing that it operates not only through steric shielding, but also by increasing dispersive attraction. Through computational experiments, the research shows the impact of this mechanism on metal-metal bond strengths and provides insights on how to adjust ligands to stabilize weak bonds.
