Altered Amygdala-prefrontal Connectivity in Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain: Resting-state fMRI and Dynamic Causal Modelling Study

Cui Ping Mao et al.

Summary: Chronic nonspecific low back pain (cNLBP) is a challenging condition to treat due to its nonspecific causes and complexity. This study investigated the connectivity between the amygdala and cortex in patients with cNLBP and found alterations in both functional and effective connectivity. These findings suggest the involvement of the amygdala in the neuropathology of cNLBP.

Functional Network Connectivity Reveals the Brain Functional Alterations in Breast Cancer Survivors

Tatyana Bukkieva et al.

Summary: Neurological and psychiatric disorders are commonly observed in breast cancer survivors, leading to changes in the functional connectivity of the default mode network. This study used rs-fMRI to assess these changes and found significant differences in the functional connectivity compared to a control group. These alterations were associated with decreased quality of life in the patients.

At the intersection of anger, chronic pain, and the brain: A mini-review

Brandon C. Yarns et al.

Summary: Experts have recently introduced research-driven subtypes of chronic pain based on proposed underlying mechanisms, with nociplastic pain potentially involving factors such as brain plasticity and emotion regulation. Data suggest a correlation between anger, anger regulation, and the presence/severity of nociplastic pain.

Inflammation and Brain Structure in Schizophrenia and Other Neuropsychiatric Disorders A Mendelian Randomization Study

John A. Williams et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between inflammation and changes in brain structures, and explores the transcriptome-driven functional basis with relevance to mental illness. It finds that genetically determined IL-6 is associated with brain structure and potentially affects areas implicated in developmental neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and autism.

Neuroplasticity related to chronic pain and its modulation by microglia

Shin-ichiro Hiraga et al.

Summary: Neuropathic pain involves alterations in neuronal function, which can be caused by nerve damage or neuroplasticity. Recent studies have shown that neuroplasticity, regulated by microglia, is linked to neuropathic pain. Understanding the mechanisms of neuroplasticity in chronic pain can lead to novel therapies. Microglia play a crucial role in modulating post-injury neuroplasticity.

Mindfulness-based stress reduction alters brain activity for breast cancer survivors with chronic neuropathic pain: preliminary evidence from resting-state fMRI

A. M. Smith et al.

Summary: The study found that MBSR intervention can improve neuropathic pain in breast cancer survivors, and this improvement is correlated with changes in connectivity in the brain. This provides a non-invasive method for alleviating pain in women following breast cancer treatment.

Reorganization of functional brain network architecture in chronic osteoarthritis pain

Joana Barroso et al.

Summary: The study found that in patients with osteoarthritis, the brain network architecture reorganizes at both global and local levels. Network connectivity related to pain intensity in OA is dissociated from major hub disruptions. This challenges the extent of dependence of OA pain on nociceptive signaling.

Summary: Pain is a multidimensional subjective experience with biological, psychological, and social factors. Chronic pain poses a huge socioeconomic burden in China. Studying the neural mechanisms of chronic pain using brain imaging and data analytical approaches is crucial for research and development of effective analgesia methods.
