Exosome detection via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for cancer diagnosis

Juan Li et al.

Summary: Exosomes, as nanoscale extracellular vesicles, are widely distributed in various biological fluids and can carry tumor-specific molecules. The clinical translation of exosomes remains challenging due to the requirement of large quantities of samples, insufficiency of traditional techniques, and complex isolation methods. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology provides a sensitive and multiplexed detection method for exosomes without the need for large samples. In this review, SERS-based exosome detection in cancer diagnosis is discussed, providing valuable insights for early cancer detection.

Quantitative proteomics identifies the core proteome of exosomes with syntenin-1 as the highest abundant protein and a putative universal biomarker

Fernanda G. Kugeratski et al.

Summary: The study used an unbiased and quantitative proteomic approach to identify core constituents of exosomes, with syntenin-1 identified as a potential universal biomarker. A comprehensive quantitative atlas of core proteins ubiquitous to exosomes was provided, highlighting the potential use of syntenin-1 as a putative universal biomarker for exosomes.

Membrane-Disrupting Molecules as Therapeutic Agents: A Cautionary Note

Steven L. Regen

Summary: Mechanistic studies have shown that membrane disrupting molecules can either destroy the integrity of cholesterol-rich phospholipid bilayers via catastrophic rupture processes as aggregates, or through mild leakage events as monomers. Designing derivatives with lower aggregation tendency has led to compounds with well-separated antifungal and hemolytic activities. Furthermore, studies have revealed significant differences in antibacterial activity between monomers and aggregates of certain molecules.
