BDNF and Pro-BDNF in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A New Perspective for Biomarkers of Neurodegeneration

Giulia Riolo et al.

Summary: In this study, the significance of BDNF and Pro-BDNF in ALS was explored and significant differences in levels of these markers were found in ALS patients. Additionally, correlations between these markers and clinical variables of ALS were identified. Therefore, BDNF and Pro-BDNF may serve as prognostic biomarkers for ALS.

Iridium nanoclusters as high sensitive-tunable elemental labels for immunoassays: Determination of IgE and APOE in aqueous humor by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry

Paula Menero-Valdes et al.

Summary: In this study, citrate-stabilized iridium nanoclusters (IrNCs) were synthesized and then chemically modified with lipoic acid (LA). The modified IrNCs were conjugated with specific antibodies to create IrNCs-labelled immunoprobes. These immunoprobes were used in competitive immunoassays to detect immunoglobulin E (IgE) and apolipoprotein E (APOE) using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed that the IrNCs-immunoprobes had high recognition capabilities and signal amplification, with detection limits in the tens of picograms per milliliter of protein.

Impact of surface roughness on the self-assembling of molecular films onto gold electrodes for label-free biosensing applications

Gorachand Dutta et al.

Summary: Controlling the surface characteristics of gold electrodes is crucial for label-free electrochemical biosensing applications, and using redox composite materials within a nanometer thickness range can mitigate the impact of roughness on interface properties. The electrochemical roughness factor and mechanical roughness root mean square of the surface are important parameters for quality control of molecularly assembled films and chemical surface modifications.

Causes of blindness and vision impairment in 2020 and trends over 30 years, and prevalence of avoidable blindness in relation to VISION 2020: the Right to Sight: an analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study

Jaimie D. Steinmetz et al.

Summary: The study assessed the prevalence and relative contribution of avoidable causes of blindness and vision impairment globally from 1990 to 2020, finding that there was no change in the global prevalence of avoidable blindness and vision impairment in adults aged 50 and older. Although the age-standardized prevalence of avoidable blindness decreased, avoidable moderate and severe vision impairment did not change.

Serum mBDNF and ProBDNF Expression Levels as Diagnosis Clue for Early Stage Parkinson's Disease

Xu Yi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether serum expressions of mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (mBDNF) and proBDNF can serve as biomarkers for early diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. The results demonstrated that mBDNF/proBDNF can be used as biomarkers for early stage Parkinson's disease.

Serum and aqueous humor levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and normal-tension glaucoma

Yu Wan Cha et al.

Summary: The study found that serum and aqueous humor BDNF levels were significantly lower in patients with POAG and NTG compared to healthy controls, with NTG patients having lower serum BDNF levels than POAG patients. The findings suggest that BDNF may be a causative systemic biomarker in NTG.

Metabolomics in Glaucoma: A Systematic Review

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: Glaucoma remains a complex and poorly understood disease, making the search for early diagnostic biomarkers crucial. This review summarizes existing metabolomic studies related to glaucoma, particularly focusing on the metabolic profiles associated with open-angle glaucoma (OAG). The findings suggest a significant role of amino acid metabolism in OAG pathophysiology and highlight metabolic disturbances in OAG patients, indicating the need for further validation and exploration of potential overlap between different biological samples.
