Review on atmospheric pressure ionization sources for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Part I: Current ion source developments and improvements in ionization strategies

Juan F. Ayala-Cabrera et al.

Summary: The use of atmospheric pressure ionization (API) sources in GC-MS analysis has gained popularity due to its advantages over traditional vacuum ionization sources. This review focuses on recent advances in GC-API-MS instrumentation, discussing new setups and couplings, as well as the development of novel API sources. In addition, new ionization strategies are reviewed to overcome drawbacks of GC-API-MS methodologies.

Elucidation of the non-volatile fingerprint in oven headspace vapor from bread roll baking by ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry

Leopold Weidner et al.

Summary: In this study, a sampling strategy was developed to collect headspace aerosols and molecules released during the baking of bread rolls. The collected vapor condensate was analyzed using ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry, revealing up to 4,700 molecular species. Furthermore, the method can simulate the dynamic release of molecules in the oven atmosphere.

Understanding the early-stage release of volatile organic compounds from rapeseed oil during deep-frying of tubers by targeted and omics-inspired approaches using PTR-MS and gas chromatography

Tomasz Majchrzak et al.

Summary: This study focuses on deep-frying different tubers in rapeseed oil at different frying temperatures to investigate the emitted volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Two approaches, targeted and omics-inspired, were proposed for the real-time monitoring of VOCs. The targeted approach using gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector revealed the dependence of pentanal and hexanal emissions on frying temperature. Meanwhile, the omics-inspired approach using solid-phase microextraction along with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and molecular networking algorithm provided insights into the relationship between various emissions. Both approaches allowed for real-time monitoring of oil degradation products.

Comparative analysis of volatile profiles in two grafted pine nuts by headspace-SPME/GC-MS and electronic nose as responses to different roasting conditions

Nadya Mara Adelina et al.

Summary: The study compared the volatile compounds and aroma profiles in grafted Pinus koraiensis and grafted Pinus koraiensis/Pinus sylvestris trees under different roasting conditions. Results indicated that increasing roasting temperature and duration decreased terpenes and aromatic hydrocarbons content, while generating more alkanes/alkenes, acids, and ketones. PKS showed higher levels of specific compounds in the late phase of roasting compared to PK, and the influence of roasting time on aroma profiles detected by E-nose was less pronounced at high temperatures.

Gas Chromatography-Atmospheric Pressure Inlet-Mass Spectrometer Utilizing Plasma-Based Soft Ionization for the Analysis of Saturated, Aliphatic Hydrocarbons

Markus Weber et al.

Summary: Soft ionization by chemical reaction in transfer (SICRIT) technique, based on dielectric barrier discharge (DBDI), produces characteristic oxidized cations for direct determination of molecular mass, overcoming the challenge of strong fragmentation for nonpolar substances like alkanes. The method combines sensitivity and easy handling of GC-EI-MS with the capability of molecular mass determination typically achieved by field ionization (FI)-MS, showing potential for broader applications in analyzing complex hydrocarbon mixtures. The study demonstrates the possibility of simultaneously detecting various analytes, such as (alkylated-) PAHs, in diesel fuel samples, expanding the analytical capabilities of high-resolution atmospheric pressure inlet mass spectrometers.
