Technology-critical elements in Rhine sediments - A case study on occurrence and spatial distribution

Ole Klein et al.

Summary: Despite their presence in almost every technical device, little is known about the occurrence, distribution, and fate of technology-critical elements (TCEs) within the environment. In this study, sediment samples from the German part of the Rhine river were collected to study the occurrence and distribution of TCEs. The results suggest possible enrichment of TCEs along the Rhine, with atmospheric deposition and anthropogenic inputs being potential sources. TCEs exhibit similar behavior to classical heavy metals.

Assessing the bioavailability of dissolved rare earths and other trace elements: Digestion experiments with aquatic plant species Lemna minor (duckweed reference standard BCR-670)

Summary: The study demonstrates that different digestion methods can impact the analysis results, with preconcentration and matrix separation improving data quality. However, HNO3 extraction results in lower REY concentrations and an inability to dissolve trace elements from detrital (alumino)silicate particles associated with the plant material.

Studies on the Content of Selected Technology Critical Elements (Germanium, Tellurium and Thallium) in Electronic Waste

Joanna Willner et al.

Summary: This article highlights the issue of metals such as germanium, tellurium, and thallium in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The study found that these metals are concentrated in the finest fractions of e-waste and may migrate in the form of dust during storage and processing. The presence of these metals poses potential environmental risks as the demand for new technologies and TECs increases.

Improved determination of technologically critical elements in sediment digests by ICP-MS/MS using N2O as a reaction gas

Ole Klein et al.

Summary: Investigating TCEs as emerging pollutants is a growing field, but data limitations exist. This study developed a new ICP-MS/MS multi-elemental approach using N2O as a reaction gas, which improved method selectivity and sensitivity, achieving good LODs and recoveries for analyzed TCEs.
